So, the current project right now with me working on it and kinda falling into the rabbit hole has turned from a more negative pov (who killed uis?) into a more positive one (why were uis good before in the first place?): this is not really out of anything if not only the fact that I think (and will mention in the intro part) that we all know why games are getting worse (mostly money and every single technique used to squeeze every last cent out of consumers AND artists), so instead of just making yet another negative video... I am flipping this to figure out what made UIs good in the 90s and 2000s in the first place. Or who.
I do have my own theory, and in this video that's what you are going to see.
That said: this is a part of the video, it's the first part of the center part (so this is not how the video starts, there is a whole section before that AAAAND a LOT of stuff after) where I get to talk about the story of Wipeout, or at least in part, because in fact that's kind of the core of the whole thing for me. I am pretty sure (and you'll see) that the reason not only we got cool UIs but also in general that games became "cool" and not just something for kids + how games started having a way more refined approach during their development to the whole aspect of aesthetic worldbuilding + specific signifiers + dedicated bold and just cool marketing IS all downstream of TDR. And yes, UIs are just a part of that, and that's what I am proving.
So, this is a snippet from the video, I am making, since this is a video about graphics design, a LOT of stuff from scratch unlike what I do usually, so you will notice that instead of just using text I am making entire fake magazine pages just because idk it's a vibe I guess and I love using that as a tribute to TDR. This part has some weird audio spots (and volume stuff that I only noticed after uploading) I have to fix and the last few seconds need to be edited, but I wanted to give you SOMETHING to understand what I am doing.
Also will fix the timing on some video stuff since there are 2 things that don't "click" perfectly yet for me. But yeah , you guys are why I can afford to take this time to really refine this so I wanna show you what I am doing :)
I plan on (HOPEFULLY) posting the full vid during the weekend. No sponsor this time around, this was taking too long and I lost it. But I don't care, I have you guys supporting me and I thank you for that since that lets me actually take the time I need to not just put out whatever I can do in X amount of time but follow through what this is turning into: not only just a criticism of modern game dev culture, but a love letter to the artists that built the landscapes a lot of us still love and consider as one of the peaks in the media.
I have bought some TDR book and I am scanning them for the video to have some high quality images that I couldn't find online. Everything is going good, I am just sorry for taking longer than usual.
So yeah, it's 5AM here now, I will go get some sleep AND I will try to finish this by the end of the week.
Thanks again for everything, and sorry for the slowdown again, things will go back to normal after this project!

UPDATE: I am a biiit late again but it is because the video has been growing in scope and I think it will be totally worth it in the end, still trying to get it out asap

I was just listening to the WipEout soundtrack and talking about the game with my uncle, who bought a PS1 in 95 and got me hooked. I'm very nostalgic for that game, so this vide is highly anticipated!

I'm excited for this! I think you're really hitting a nerve here. The anticipation of this video alone had me remembering some crazy good uis from the past. Dungeon Siege from 2001 for example, so satisfying to just navigate a menu. Man I miss those days. But many do, so maybe they'll return someday.
