DRO installation on small mills
🕑 Added 2020-04-05 17:50:38 +0000 UTCHey Patrons! One of you messaged me and asked about how the DRO is installed on my mill. This mill came with the DRO installed from the factory, but I can show pictures of how they did it, in case it helps those of you with similar mills. Here are some photos. The only part that might be controversial is where the X axis installed. By putting it on the back of the table, you do lose some Y-travel, and this is annoying sometimes. I can't access the very front of my table with the spindle. However I think mounting it on the front edge of the table wouldn't be possible here, because that space is needed by the end stops and limit switch for the power feed. Your mill may vary, but that's worth thinking about when planning your install. Here come the photos! I hope this helps someone out there.

The lesson I learned when I installed the DRO on my 70’s Taiwanese mill is that you need a mill in order to make the fixtures and you have to disassemble the mill in order to measure, check an mount them. After several disassembly / assembly iterations I got reasonably familiar with the task (-: ... good fun though, definitively worth the effort, the DRO really improves things!
