Lens Videos - What the Heck?
🕑 Added 2019-12-11 16:11:27 +0000 UTCHi Patrons! I've had a lot of new $5+ supporters lately, which is amazing. Thank you all for that. Since there are a lot of new folks in those groups, it seems like a good time to re-explain Lens videos.
Patreon has this feature where I can shoot quick video on my phone and post them here for $5+ folks. I use it as a way to give realtime updates on stuff I'm working on, behind the scenes details, or sharing exciting moments as they happen. Just the other day, for example, I managed to align the bed on my lathe to within a ten-thousandth, and it was so amazing I had to share. I also explained a bit about cutting test bars and how that works. I also recently showed the progress on the D-bit grinder restoration, and all the half-finished projects around that. The main YouTube videos are several weeks behind what I'm actually doing day-to-day, so Lens is like a 1.21 GIGAWATT TIME MACHINE.
The catch is that, much like the flaming tire tracks of a Delorean, these videos only last 24 hours. I know, it's kinda annoying, and I've written to Patreon a bunch about it. However, that's how they want the system to work.
Anyways, if you're wondering why you're missing those videos, that could be why. If you see a Lens post, you only have 24h to watch it. They appear here in this feed, and also in the Patreon app, so use whichever is easier for you. Despite the limitations, they are a fun quick little perk I can provide, and I hope you enjoy them.

I'm not sure- I haven't heard other reports of that, but who knows.

Quinn, just a question about the Lens videos Is it common for them to buffer a lot? I just watched the one about how you got the tiny thrust bearings and it took a good 25 minutes to make it through. Buffers about every 10 seconds.

Yah, totally- they don't want to be YouTube, so there has to be some time limit. Hosting is expensive. I just wish they'd give us a week, or even a couple of days. I think that would make a difference for a lot of my audience, who are not generally tech-obsessed young folks checking their phones every 18 seconds. 😀

I can understand Patreon not wanting to be a media hosting platform. That's really their business model. However, it would be nice though to give the creators a more flexibility in how their Lens videos are presented. Having them available until the final video is released would be ideal. I know I often don't have time to check them out before they turn into pumpkins.

I don't like the fleeting nature of them either. They are trying to train us to check the app more often, for fear of missing something.
