Yah, being outdoors it would be difficult. To make propane work, it seems you need to have a really good hearth- fully enclosing the boiler in firebrick to contain all the heat. It heats up in about 5 mins if you get it all set up right, or never if you don't. 😀

I do love learning new things each day. I suppose the reason we didn't use propane was because of how long it takes to get the pipe hot versus using MAPP or acetylene. Plus being outside with the wind might make it near impossible to impart enough heat with propane. Your boiler is turning out amazing. Thanks for sharing these videos.

Propane does get hot enough to melt silver solder- it's the most common torch people use in model boiler making. I just need to get my technique down.

Back in the 80's when I was installing air conditioners, we used a "B" tank (single tank) and torch for silver solder. Propane won't get hot enough to melt good silver solder from what I remember. We used propane only for water copper pipe joints which don't need silver solder. In a pinch we would use MAPP gas (yellow cylinder) for a/c lines, but it would have a hard time if there was any wind. In the 90's I used a small oxy-acetylene "tote" tank for a/c work, but had to be very careful to not overheat the copper.

Ooh, a pencil sharpener is a great idea! Between you, me, and the other Patrons, I do plan to build an iPhone charger from the steam engine eventually. I thought that would be both fun and have good comedy value as the most ridiculous possible way to charge a phone.

Hey Quinn, I have an idea for your steam engine. You could find an old electric pencil sharpener and use the steam engine instead. You have to admit it would be kinda funny 'Runnin up the boiler' to sharpen your pencil... Plus it could be a fun artsy fartsy Brassey steam punky thing ala Clickspring. Just a thought. :)
