This month's featured book is The Pennsylvania A3 Switcher by the legendary Kozo Hiraoka. This is Kozosan's beginner locomotive project book and it's incredible. If you're interested in building a locomotive, this is the book to buy. He walks you through every detail, every operation, every fixture and every skill you need to build this excellent locomotive in 3.5" or 7.25" gauge (ie. fairly small or giant, your choice).
I'll be honest- if I had known about this book before I discovered stationary engine casting kits, I might be halfway through building this locomotive right now. This book is that good, and I will definitely be building my own Pennsy at some point. Thanks again, and see you all in tomorrow's video!

Thank you for all you put out. I actually built a steam engine in 1976 when I was in High School. I'm looking forward to trying to use the info to help me build the engine for the SS.

It will definitely help you on that steam wagon project, I would say. A simple locomotive project covers all the skills needed to build any sort of steam vehicle. It's true that Kozo's books are not cheap, but so it goes with a niche hobby like this. Not a lot of volume to keep costs down. It's beautifully produced though, and you won't be disappointed. He does all the drawings by hand so the entire book is a work of art. Of course, even the simplest locomotive project is still a huge project, so it's good to work up to these things.

I just ordered it, but WOW, it's not a cheap book! I actually want to build a working Stanley Steamer Mountain Wagon. I'm more of a car person (rather than trains). I'm thinking 1/8 scale using RC, but something large enough to ride on.

That makes me happy. I especially look forward to your line survey, grading, and track building ... because like, you, I know you want to. :-) But don't hesitate to ask for extra funding for something big and/or fun ... that's all I'm saying.

No bribery required for this one! 😀 It's a virtual certainty that I will build a locomotive at some point, but I need to build up my skills more first with smaller steam projects. I have a queue of interesting ones that will be my continuing Steam School. Stay tuned!
