🕑 Added 2024-12-08 09:43:57 +0000 UTCHello again. In pictures this week, we start with a book cover depicting Compton Pauncefoot, the place not the made-up person. Then we have some Dacia Springs, Richard’s experiment with Spring trim removal, and Chris de Burgh with his strange backwards, trouser-pressed hair. Now some linkerings…
The origins of Wendens Ambo as a character

The trouser discussion during the Wendons Ambo video reminded me of a sickening thing I heard during the Bernie Madoff meltdown where they discussed the friends he kept - and ripped off - where he lived in West Palm Beach. They described how life was different there including shops that sold $7,000 trousers. That there is the successful person’s life after denim. They’re probably $14,000 now aren’t they.

In some ways the name Compton Pauncefoot is even better in original Norman, which per that Wikipedia entry translates to "Fat-Belly's Narrow Alley."

The BYD Dolphin also sports Linglongs. With a symbol of a dolphin on the sidewall

Talking of anthropomorphic place names, on my commute to Milton Keynes I used to pass signs for Newton Longville (quite a nasal, upright, starchy voiced man in a suit) and Drayton Parslow (very louche, always with a wry smile, lingers on the P when saying Parslow, often wears a linen suit to lounge in). Given they are two villages always appearing on the same sign post, it leads to comedic next door neighbour shenanigans....

With regard to the fading indicators, I noticed on a larger Mazda, (CX-60?) they came on as quick and as sharp as LED, then faded out, I thought it was a strange design, almost mimicking incandescent bulbs.

So bits of listener feedback. 1. Tried the new spring. Quite liked it but the wife did think it was tinny (her first car was a Passat…) the driver’s seat does seem quite high; however they are currently doing 0% pcp deals for like £194 down + £194pm absolute steal! 2. Having taken the long way home between Bath and Towcester the back Cotswold road are good fun in a little car. Lots of double villages. Upper this and Lower that or Greater and Little. 3. My father had a w124 as a private ambulance. 7ft between front seat and the door so suitable for a trolley. Did many a mile relocating corpses.

Might be a good idea to put off ordering a new Mini until you can be sure it wasn’t built on the day they visited!! 🤣

Jonny: What’s Wendon Ambo drive? Richard: Something racist. 🤣 And the origin of Buzness Untrest!
Adam
Fat Bellies narrow valley 🤣
Emmajg
Nah can't top that, though I've had a worse incident 😬😂
Adam
Which will probably involve poop

Rich says you should put up a fake show notes next time just for shits & giggles for example link to a Google maps pin & mention something ludicrous that Jonny's been doing 😂

In South Africa, the Dacia Spring is the Renault Kwid. It's an ICE model over there.

When I visited the Kruger Park last year, we went in on 'South African' visitors rates as they are much cheaper. Fine for my girlfriend who still retains her SA passport but not for me. "I have Buzznuss Untrusts" and "I haven't shot a Rhino in years" were my well practiced phrases should they ask me to prove my SA status. Luckily they checking process was less than thorough in the end so I never got to deploy the lines. And we still love playing the anal caravan game on a long journey.

@Steve Morton If they haven't managed to mess that up as well Which is why they don't run car factory
Steven Mclachlan
Nobody gave me this shit in south Africa!
Paul Sheward
Wendons Ambo. My favourite episode ever… 🤣🤣🤣
Edward Ferguson
Lucky you SSGs don't run a car factory
Luke
Chris De Burgh looks like it could be a Jonny Smith relative from Norwich. Also, are those the factory spec brand new tyres? Linglongs aren't particularly inspiring...
Ant Brown
I don't think I'd've had time to post my Compton Pauncefoot or Edward Woodward facts later, so basically everyone wins 🤷🏻

In 2022 during a 3500 mile UK road trip I stopped for lunch at the pub you passed @3:45 in the Wendens Ambo video. Lets call it a pilgrimage to S&S :)
Ant Brown
Bonus fact: The guy who gave me a lift to the match bore an astonishing resemblance to Equalizer era Edward Woodward. He looked more like Edward Woodward than Edward Woodward did in fact.
Ronnie Whelan
The Linglong Go Master sounds like the type of tyre I'd entrust with my family's safety. I'd like to pull the trigger on a set for when I do some track work in my 2.2.

Compton Pauncefoot is definitely a real place. Where I grew up (North Cheriton) we played them at cricket when I was around 13 maybe? Village cricket match. It's not that far from North Cadbury, which (Cadbury Castle) is supposed to be the seat of King Arthur, allededly. I was awful, as I didn't play as a rule, so was stuck in the outfield. On the plus side, I was so bored I taught myself how to burp. Which was nice.

It's the quality and attention to detail that we all come back for....👍
Lisa Monsterken
Compton Pauncefoot sound like an old school, chain-smoking, dumb looking but really smart Detective from the 70s. You have piqued my interest, dear Sirs!
Will Flack
That Wendens Ambo video is one of my favourites :)
Steve Morton
Easily done, I look forward to listening to the podcast later.

A premature emanation?

Ooops! Release time setting error. Oh well, here they are. You can try to imagine what nonsense is in the podcast coming later.
