Podcast 203 - The Malbec mechanic
🕑 Added 2024-03-24 18:00:06 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard come up with a new idea for a late night YouTube channel. Also in this episode, Jonny is annoyed to find his Porsche 944 shooting break is just a dream, a Boxster estate from the Netherlands, reviews of the VW ID. Buzz and Peugeot 408, two years with a Volkswagen e-Up, an American listener has an unusual question about Rovers, the Rivian R3X and what it might look like, browsing eagles for sale, discovering you have a dangerous dog, spotting a discarded belt, and Richard’s Range Rover is for sale at last.

On a shit car form I'm on I assisted another member who lived in American buy and ship Vauxhall parts as he attempted to convert his Cadillac Catera into a Vauxhall Omega. The facelift Catera is almost identical to an Omega so the conversion was pretty much just set of Omega Badges and a new grill. A re badged Omega must have been a real high for Cadillac. Does this also not leave scope for a Cadillac Catera Eagle Quest?

On the topic of Keeping up Appearances and Rovers, my Grandad had a new 213 on a D-reg, which he very much liked, but had to be replaced with a Montego when he was hit from behind after about 18 months - Rover could not supply parts or a full shell for his 18month old car as they had fully transitioned to the low-lip boot lid design, so his car was reluctantly written off because of the facelift!

I've got an early fairly ratty 944 and the rear hatch is delaminating. Stop giving my ideas to give it the DP treatment. Still sounds wrong.

I can’t get rid of an image from the new outro music. It conjures an 80’s style fundraising music video with the nations no-name full suspension mountain bike men all in choral formation behind S&S at a grand piano. Raising enough money for a large bag o’ cans for the nations injured NNFSMB guys.

Yes, check the coolant crossover pipes - another Porsche ‘character trait’

I’m with Richard on the 924 vs 944 debate, though I might be slightly biased as I do actually own an early-ish 924 😉. And the 924S is actually mechanically very similar to an early 944, but lighter and with a better drag coefficient…

Maybe I'll bring him to FOTU as an on stage guest 🤔

I do love a very big dog. Richard
George Wade
Richard I feel you need to experience walking down the street with a Great Dane to understand how unexpectedly dangerous dogs can be. You're more than welcome to borrow mine, he's called Bruce and he's calm. 🤔

Great podcast this week chaps, I laughed out loud a few times.. Jonny, I fear your non-evaporating Boxster puddle is likely to be engine coolant rather than A/C. Anti-freeze doesn't evaporate like plain water and although there is condensation in your A/C system, it would dry up the same speed as rain water.

You can pick up a nice rust free 944 for less than $ 5k here in Oregon

Birds of prey, 10 minutes drive away deserved more giggles. Super funny ep!

Onslows Cortina was definitely around for a few years. There was an Autoshite thread on it.

The gem was Hyacinth always telling Elizabeth to replace her ‘old’ Metro, which was 2 years younger than Hyacinth’s own SD3, and only a couple of years old when filming began.

The Richard ‘Bouquet’ Rover is still alive with a valid MOT until July 2024 (D541EFL) and about 54,000 miles. Seems to have spent a bit of time in storage some years ago.

The Skoda Enyaq that comes out this year has preheating: https://youtu.be/j_OFIcndGLA?t=1002 so I would assume the rest of VW would get it at some point as well. As an owner of two EVs (and in the process of building a third) I can also confirm that charging is slowly becoming more difficult. It hasn't added any real time so far but you always get a small shock when you arrive and all the chargers are in use. Luckily just as I pull up usually someone pulls out (Be good!). Rating charging speeds may be a no-brainer for those of us who like to get to know our cars but there are cars out there can't charge any faster than 50KW etc. So I guess for them looking for a Middle or Slow charger makes sense.

I think the issue with that one is it's just a hatch replacement so it ends up looking too narrow. I don't hate it but don't love it

I was thinking, I wonder what an RX7 would look like as a cargo type conversion... I was excited to hear it could be a thing, till I saw the reality.
David Nickolls
I’m going to say that was your best episode so far👏👏. I’m now looking forward to seeing Jonny at the festival of the unexceptional in his shooting brake tallon edition boxer with bespoke fitted Calm Eagle cage.

I thought that too, I'm sure the Escort Cosworth came in Mallard green but then wondered if it was just abbreviated slang by Foaaaaaaawwwwd fans
Brendan McAleer
I went and looked it up and Ford made both a Tourmallard AND a Mallard green, with the latter being on higher spec cars. I also passed a sign with a mallard on it the other day that said 15 mallards to the duck shed
Matt Tester
Excellent, I know him via FinalGear which will be an old site Richard should remember at least.

Ebay is full of non-licenced bodyshells for rc models, the best is the Ford Focus WRC with sponsor logos edited to avoid copyright, so its BP Ultimate livery has become a DP Ultimatum livery.
John Hammond
Keeping up Appearances had a fair bit of car based humour, Onslows backfiring multi coloured Cortina always arriving to embarrass Hyacinth. Not to mention the dead Avenger in his Garden which the angry dog lived in. Inexplicably I'm part of a WhatsApp group titled "Onslows abandoned Avenger" but cannot remember how that name came about.

Charles is indeed a Patron.
Matt Tester
Not sure if he's a patron but I happen to know about that idea Charles had, I don't even think my local scrapyard with it's similar selection of old Freelanders to Jonny's local one would have a Rover 213.
Andrew Armstrong
Excellent audio this week chaps 👍

Taking the thread back to coaches, quite a lot of PSVs in the 1970s and early 1980s were described as "DPs" standing for dual purpose. It would refer to a coach style vehicle that had bus features (eg bus style entry doors, space for ticket machine or bell push buttons. A compromise vehicle that could provide a bus service in the day and equally touring with a group further afield. Equally it might be something that looked like a bus from the outside but had high back coach style seats and maybe provision for some luggage or a higher ratio axle to give it a bit more pace on the open road.

Great podcast, couple of things. The Company I work for has a DP department, with DP Managers and so on, in this instance it's dynamic positioning relating to the gubbins that keep ships stationary. It still cracks me up every time I get invited to a DP meeting. Also, on the 3 things, once you are the proud owners of a slightly grumpy peregrine falcon or an easy-going eagle (GSOH) I imagine there's a whole lexicon of names for the offspring of mammals/lunch to learn.

You can also buy a replacement rear hatch for the FD RX7 that turns it into a shooting brake https://www.reddit.com/r/UnexpectedWagon/s/5y7v4Qjo5e https://radracer.tumblr.com/post/638658957548929034/mazda-rx-7-fd-shooting-brake

Hexagonal Onions, more from them later in the show....

I love how mad each of Jonny's fantasy cheap Porsche's end up in their sub par condition

If only we knew someone with a cheap Boxster ….

Thanks guys!
