WIP oil firing & NCO tenwheelers
🕑 Added 2025-06-14 02:08:20 +0000 UTCHey all! We know how much of a bummer it's been knowing we had to pause funding for a month; and we also know much we enjoy what we're working on. Here's a quick and cute look at my dev level and playing around with some of the oil firing things on our new engine, the beautiful NCO tenwheeler made by Dan!

No. While common carrier roads are always up to be represented such as the Oahu Railway, the team will not be doing anything based on the sugar plantation railroads. This is because of the brutal and problematic labor practices and treatment of workers that occured on sugar plantations both on Hawaii and on the mainland United States.
Owen Firth
Question: Will the sugar railroads of Hawaii be represented at a future date? I know that they are out of the scope at the games release but it seems that they are a missing piece of American narrow gauge history considering how closely the Hawaiian islands were linked to their railroads.

This is unrelated to the vlog, but I remember that the roundhouse doors yall made didnt have any sound when opening them. The roundhouse doors in Durango squeak and groan when you open them Will there be an option or something where you can change the sound?

bendy track for the bendy people

On the San Juan map, are there flatlands/farmlands planned like where Monte Vista sits?
ZuLu
are you planning to make a commodore 64 edition of this game
Dante
For the discussion on camera movement, what about having cameras attached to vantage points on the engine that might not be realistic so to speak? For example, one at the stack, one facing out from smokebox/tender, above each coupler, etc. You scroll through them via arrow keys. Heck, could even throw in cameras for watching wheels/rods so you can discern which part of the stroke is causing a particular knock ;)
The California Poppy
They do plan for tutorials.

SOMEBODY GAVE HIM FIREEEEEEEEEE!

Cab seats will be limited to the designs as-built or as-present in visual reference. In the 10-26D Drawing 42, the cab seats were built to allow them to be slid forward or back to get in and out of that part of the cab, given the top-mount throttle requires a more forward sitting position. The drawing 52's have a backhead throttle and the cab moved further back to avoid this.
Dan Silbaugh
Seeing the seat in the cab there..... Are cab seats a customizable option? Completely useless in terms of game play, but I recently learned that the C&S had a few engineers who built their own seats. And the one I got to handle a bit was really fancy, for a homemade thing. It was fully sprung, and pretty ingenious. Since I see the bar along the cab side there.....

Love the work! So I assume yall will eventually have Tutorials for all Operating with Coal, or Oil Burners Instead of having us attend a class on it I assume.
Dante
Love the bell action!
Douggie the Wyoming train guy
I still want that warrantee on that diesel extended to my state mark
WildEyedJagoff
will we be able to notice the difference in how the engine functions between Stephenson and Walschaerst gear?
TheNewIKB4472
Much impressed, and very relieved to hear you sounding much better for your time off. Take care of yourselves ♥

Fire Out?! Oh No.... 0_0 (Awkward shove-flaming-firestick-into-firehole-door-and-remove-again-without-setting-everything-else-in-the-cab-on-fire minigame shenanigans wen?)
Studio346
Yup! We're trying to sort out of we want the default controls to live on the opposing side of the keyboard from running such that it's easy to do both with keyboard commands at the same time, or make them swappable per seat.
Studio346
That's basically the exact plan, yeah, unless you just want "fire off easy mode" - keep the engine at MAWP and let it go. Otherwise it'll be "make fire hot" or "not".
Studio346
Up/down is definitely a want on my end; I'd chatted with Tristan about making this feature work and this was the first pass at it.
Studio346
I believe it was before the big gameplay vlog that I'd done some more tweaking to right-size the playability vs. jumpiness, and it's felt pretty good since then.
Studio346
I would -love- to take a look at the fire pan in the R class. I have no doubt that's how it works with that locomotive (especially seeing how much the flicker lit up the terrain around the loco) - listening to Alex instruct Rex about firing oil it was like "this is nearly backwards from literally everything I've ever heard from anyone about firing oil." The normal convention and what we've read in firing manuals from several railroads is to run the atomizer as low as you can, but it still needs to increase with draft to push the fireball all the way to the back of the firebox for the most heat.
Bokev29
That truly is the gluppiest of hillos
IWillBoom
We'll have to have a bit of chat about oil burning, because as you draft the fire harder the oil tends to self atomise and when you start shutting back is when you have to bring it up because the draft has died down
Christopher Thompson
The whistle sounded great in this. I didn’t notice any sort of stepping or anything with it
RF3985
This is really what I wanted to see personally from the next dev vlog, so obviously I’m thrilled with how this looks and feels! An idea for the arrow keys, maybe if you held down right control on the keyboard while moving forward in back it could move the players POV up/down. That way you could peek at the stack through the left door in the cab
Nightmonkey
I agree with Wild Bison you should swap WASD and arrow keys. And keep up the amazing work.
Gerry David
Lol really hope Kan sees this and sees your Hyce track. You think by now you’d get a bit better at it ;) Awesome work to all of y’all, love seeing the progress. You all truly have an absolute gem on your hands.
Mark Johnston
Lookin fantastic as usual. Question: do you have plans for how the auto-fireman is going to work? I love firing, but also sometimes just want to run while keeping the fire and steam generation in mind. Will there be a way to instruct the auto fireman of your plans and needs, like for example to tell him to get a roaring fire going for an upcoming grade or to dial it back for lighter working?
Caelum Valdovinos
Hearing the oil burner rumble as the engine works hard brings me to my happy place of learning to fire
Andrew Frame
This sneak peak in particular excites me. I see a lot has been done very well. Cheers!
Nick B.
I'd imagine they'll allow us to remap keys
Ethan Larribeau
Will there be keyboard controls for oil firing?
Wild Bison
Who doesn't love the look of oil tenders? I might be the odd duck out here, but I'd switch the WASD and arrow keys or give us the option. For my brain WASD means "move me" and arrow keys mean "move thing I'm attached to". Just my two cents. Can't wait to see what gets cooked up next! (Fingers crossed for more geared locomotives)
The California Poppy
As per the last dev vlog there will be a coal burning option.
Forrest
I love little ten wheelers like this one! Question. Will this locomotive be customizable? For instance, will a coal-fired version be possible? Reminds me of the 4-6-0s the ET&WNC used. Thanks!
Ridgeeway Spark Arrestor
I'm loving this! More like this, please! Don't feel like you have to make more videos, I understand that schedules are hard and work is work and all that. I'm just saying I really enjoy videos like this.
Studio346
It's fun balancing fire effects, performance, and also managing every sort of damper / firedoor / firepan style. I did a *ton* of research looking into who shoots fire out of where and when - lol - and not every chooch does it. We'll be working on it; I'd love to have a good fire flicker that hits the landscape but any extra lighting tends to be a performance hog; so it's a balancing game.

👍🍺 Dan the Man. Thanks too for thinking of us with all that is going on...
WasatchWind
So y'all don't need to do this if you need time in the future for another pause - but thanks for doing it nonetheless. Thank y'all so much for your awesome work. We look forward to the next devlog, but please take good care of yourselves, hope you're all doing better.
473 Productions
Y’all at Studio 346 do a great job, take all the time y’all need.
Jonah Snyder
This was a wonderful little devlog! The oil firing mechanics look fantastic!
DeadliestIdiot
This was a great little glimpse. Thanks for sharing!
Andrew Treece
Mark and gang awesome work. Question? Are you guys gonna attempt the little bite of flame flash at night? Thanks for the update it's awesome the amount of detail and love that has been given to this project.
whonow
Locomotive looks stunning! I love the busy tender connection hoses, will they react dynamically with the turns and stay connected? It's always bothered me in other games where the hoses look good on straight track but keep that pose and come apart when moving.
Infidel 13
Love the little update!
kyle pennypacker
Bummer? yes. NCO ten wheeler and oil firing making up for it? FUCK YES! This thing is awesome
