I stay away from politics. I also live in another country (Saudi). Safer than the US in a lot of ways. Everyone is a moderate on some matters. It's the pet peeves on certain issues that swing us. Most don't see that. It used to be that both sides could disagree and still be friends. I think social media ruined that. So without going into political views, that's as how I see it.

I lost my mom in 2010. Five years later, I lost my dad. There will always be those moments when you think you could have been a better son (or daughter). That never goes away. My mother was closed casket and my father was open casket, and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I miss my dad more than my mom ... and I was closer to my mom in a lot of ways. I truly grieve my father, perhaps because I saw his body. My mother, because I never saw her body, I never felt like she truly went away. But for both parents, I see them in dreams and it feels like I still have contact with them.

Aunt Shirley sounds amazing! The kind of person you can confide things to. Like, sitting there having a drink and testing the waters with a small comment, then grow to a small revelation, then by the 4th or 5th scotch you're telling her all your secrets and hoping she reciprocates!

It's OK, my mother was a controlling manipulative black-hearted emotional vampire but I actually took care of her for the last 2 years of her life before her passing. In spite of everything, she didn't deserve to go to a nursing home -like my brother wanted. So yeah, I understand about not missing your mother.
