We start with the star-studded feature debut of PTA: the tale of an older scam artist who takes a young gambler who’s down on his luck under his wing, only to find that there’s always a cost. The hosts return to their patented format of three spectra: diegesis (a plot walkthrough), pedagogy (symbolism and themes), and “Howdy Do Dat?” (behind the scenes trivia and production notes). One of the exciting things about doing this series is both Andersons have interesting parallel arcs of artistic development, starting out with these scrappy ‘96 indies. The Coens are basically fully formed by Barton Fink/Hudsucker Proxy, but the Andersons don’t feel like they’re in total command of their form until the late-00s/2010s. (ppl might prefer Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums, or Boogie Nights and Magnolia, and those are great screenplays, but I don’t think they’re at their peak as *directors* until later, pretty much when they pair up with Alexandre Desplat/Jonny Greenwood)
