If you liked Connery in this, I think my favorite performance of his is in "The Man Who Would Be King". I'd almost describe it as one of his last performances as an actor instead of a performance of "Sean Connery".

Tom Clancy novels were among the first "adult" novels I ever read. I read them in middle school which is also when 9/11 happened so yeah he influenced me a lot in those days. Most of his books dont hold up well but Hunt For Red October definitely does. Basically he had one good idea and knew a lot about the cold war dynamic so he was kind of adrift once the Soviet Union fell. In retrospect his worst thing might be what at the time was my favorite book ever Without Remorse. That book has aged so awfully. For one I found its story about revenge and its Fridged female character to be groundbreaking at the time cause I was in middle school and had not encountered actually good art about revenge. But much worse was its politics. That book makes the argument that American did not lose Vietnam on the battlefield it was lost because the military was stabbed in the back by the higher ups, political leadership, and traitorous civilians back home. You may recognize this as the Hitler argument. The other argument of Without Remorse is that the problem with the War on Drugs is the USA is too kind and lenient towards drug dealers and drug users. What we need is to just start murdering drug dealers in the streets and disincentivizing drug use by massively increasing sentences for drug addicts. Anyway tom clancy had really bad politics but Hunt For Red October and Cardinal of the Kremlin are really great books and the stuff that makes this movie good do mostly come from Clancy's novel. It is possible for shithead conservatives to make good art but its probably limited.

This is lowkey one of my all time favorite movies. Definitely a "Sunday afternoon watching TV with my dad" movie.

I would love to hear them do the two Harrison Ford Jack Ryan movies. I'm surprised they had so little experience with this movie/franchise. I grew up watching the Jack Ryan movies and I'm a similar age to Mike and Abe, though I did grow up in a military family. I think the fun thing about Jack Ryan, as a character, is that he can be both the badass and the underdog "fish-out-of-water", and the details that was put into his backstory to make it all work. Lastly, I'm (jokingly) sad they didn't mention Down Periscope when listing all of the 90's submarine movies!
