The songwriting comment really got me thinking. I'm starting some first-time songwriting in the metal genre, and I want to focus a good chunk of the songs on an exploration of grief many years after a loss, and how the pains you deal with are different than when the loss first happened. Given this kind of lyrical content, I find myself writing some lines that could definitely sound like I'm unwell while writing/performing, but I'm actually doing very well, have been doing pretty good for a while, and I just want to be able to put words to the feelings I have when I'm at my lowest (days like death anniversaries and so on). Also, some deathcore (metal subgenre) bands that I think tackle topics like that very well and have great writers and performers behind them: Lorna Shore (particularly the album Pain Remains and the EP ...And I Return to Nothingness) Left To Suffer (particularly the albums Feral and On Death) Whitechapel (particularly the albums The Valley and Kin) Also, trigger warning on Lorna Shore's last 3 songs on Pain Remains: it talks about suicide and it is incredibly heart-wrenching, but I think those songs are a master-class in how to display despair musically, from the lyrics to the vocal style to the instrumentals. Impossible to keep a dry eye if you watch the videos and read the lyrics, so be forewarned! (Also their vocalist Will Ramos is bonkers good at scream vocals, and I highly recommend checking out his one-take performances on YouTube if you're into that)
