Glad you're back, I was just thinking I was missing your pod and somehow found out it moved to the patreon feed, so I signed up just for 1Upsmanship. Game wise I'm a bit of a hybrid between both of your tastes, like Michael, I'm very much into artsy, story based games with unique concepts, but on the other hand, I've always been a nintendo kid as well, and can really appreciate good bombastic set pieces. That said, my FPS period came from the PC, so quake 3 arena, half life, and Unreal Tournament were my jam, and when I played Halo it didn't catch me as I thought it was a worse version of Unreal Tournament. The way you were talking about turn based western RPGs makes me hope you'll be talking about Baldur's Gate 3 soon as well, as that's an amazing return of that format.

Missed this series big time. Very recently went back into the catalogue to listen to some older episodes just to get some video game content in my podcasts. Any plans to discuss the Arkham series, or at the very least Arkham City, the best one? Or any Crash Bandicoot/Spyro content, my own personal tastemakers.

Also, you sometimes talk about what genres you're not giving enough attention, and it got me thinking: Do you only play games where you play as one person? Meaning, you never really cover strategy games, turn based or real time. Is that a conscious decision or a gaming blind spot?

I find it fascinating that Michael's definition of different rpg types seems to leave no room for real time with pause like baldurs gate and planescape: torment, which are arguably some of the classics, and what we now call a crpg. Would they then be called arpg like diablo? Because that feels like a way too broad category then.

Dude, shout out Doug TenNapel! The Neverhood is my favorite game that's never been re-released. And I used to draw Earthworm Jim all-the-time! Classic! Sucks to find out he sucks. I didn't know that. And will forever pretend I still don't know that. :)

I m happy to see some mention of old point-and-click adventure games, especially Willy Beamish. That game triggered an existential crisis as a kid. Playing a nostalgia-filled look at being a nine-year-old in the year I turned ten really made me realize I would never have a single-digit age again and that I was marching inexorably toward the grave. Anyway, I don't hold that against the game, mostly.

I didn't know that anyone else in the world remembered Eternal Champions! I loved the character that could turn people into gold. Also, was it the first fighting game to have a taunt button?
