The holodeck isnt the only new form of entertainment in Star Trek! There are the the many many new board games that get invented (Kalto, Kataskat, that weird finger game data plays). Theres an entire episode built around the silly VR headset that gives you orgasms. Theres lots of scattered mentions of other things as well like virtual concerts and symposiums, or vacationing on odd planets with new extreme sports. I think the TNG crew are just a bunch of classist nerds obsessed with the 20th century... nerds of a feather flocking together and all that.
