That cat story reminds me of when mine got out six years ago when I stepped outside to check the mail. My mailbox is right outside my front door, right on that wall, in fact, but he was apparently in stealth kitty mode, and slipped between my ankles. The little turd was gone for over 36 hours. I believe he’s in my profile picture actually.
