PROJECT: A Patchwork Coat
🕑 Added 2024-09-17 04:40:06 +0000 UTCMy friend Ben Coleman has a jacket that he wore daily for ten years. It served him well! But you wear something that much for a decade and it's just a matter of time before it accrues some battle damage.
You guys already know where this is going.
Yeah.
I mended the fuck outta this coat.

Coleman is a big fan and collector of VHS and LaserDiscs, so, naturally, he already had some videotape-themed fabric picked out for me to use.
Since the fabric pattern was really going to pop against the jacket, I tried to make each patch look really intentional. For this elbow tear, I specifically cut out the fabric to frame the VHS tapes as centered as I could get it.

Never in my life have I ever sewed cuffs before. Never have I even contemplated how one would repair frayed, ripped cuffs! So taking on these bad boys was a fun challenge. Let's just gloss over the fact that my first time around, I accidentally made one cuff noticeably longer than the other. It's ok! I fixed it U_U

This pocket breast mini-hole/snag didn't actually need to be fixed, but I just really wanted to make one perfect little flower patch. #Worth #It

Yeah, I dunno, I just went ham on this thing.

Fingers sewin' faster than a phone camera can capture:

Aaaaaaaaand, VOILA!

There's actually a bunch more spots I stitched closed or patched, but this is enough photos for one post. It was quite a challenge sewing through a thick, padded jacket, let me tell you! But it was fun and I am pretty pleased with the results. I'd tell you how Coleman reacted to it but unfortunately he came down with a bug right before we were supposed to meet up so who knows.
In any case, Tig's happy she gets to sleep on it a bit longer.

Wow great mending ! I love that the patch on the bottom left, near the pocket, looks like a rabbit.

I don’t know Ben or how he will feel about it, but I’m hella jealous! That coat rocks!

I like how you had the cuffs match all the patches, to make things look more natural. Well done.

Wahah the curse of using natural light!

At first glance with the before and after I got confused to how you dyed it grey LOL Once again, excellent work bringing the dead back to life!!!
