Super late here but just started the show. I think Freiren insisting it's the same is less speaking about how Fern sees magic and more about how Freiren does. Before this moment Fern saw her as obsessed with magic and that magic is Freirens special calling or something. Almost like Fern is having imposter syndrome with her just being someone who stumbled on magic and Freiren being a proper magic user.

4:10 - This starting scene is actually really interesting. Frieren tells Fern a few of her weaknesses, then realizes that Fern is distraught and offers praise where her strengths are. It really shows that despite her cold exterior, Frieren is an excellent teacher. She understands emotions better than she thinks she does.

@Blake N the "grandma" thing is hyperbole. I view her more as an odd, "quirky" (i.e. possibly undiagnosed neurodivergent) aunt. Children aren't the only ones that haven't figured this kinda stuff out yet, I'm in my 30s and still struggling to learn and understand it

I don't agree Frieren is a grandma. She's more of a child than anything. Even though she's so old, she's just learning about the human concepts of death, time, and love. This entire show is about her learning those things and fully processing her relationship with the party of heroes, obviously one in particular. The super old voice just doesn't work for her.

She is a grandma though, she acts like one. A little bit insulting to the original voice actress, Atsumi Tanezaki is one of the best voice actors in anime currently, she voiced Anya from Spy X Family and Vivy from Vivy. Both English and Japanese are just as good as each other, no need to compare, Frieren Beyond Journey's End is enjoyable in both Japanese and English.

thats completly wrong their two usses of rust either 1 you use it for any oxidation or 2 only iron its never cirtain metals its either one or all as i exsplained in last coment either used for all oxidisation including copper oxide or only uise it for iron oxide meaning the only metal that rusts would be iron everything else that contains iron is not a metal but an alloy if your going be pedantic on the meaning be consistent

Exactly it is /iron/ oxide. Coloquily it is called tarnish or patina if it's this kind of oxidation. It is used differently than rust bc it indicates the type of metal as well as the type of corrosion. Rust eats and corroded while other oxidations form a protective layer. If something is "rusted" colloquially you would expect it to be damaged or hard moving in some kind of way. Certain metals are used bc they specifically do not rust but oxide in a different way

I'm glad you guys did the English dub. The Japanese dub's voice for Frieren is still breathy and flat, but it's MUCH higher pitched, so your view on it is gonna be vastly different depending on which you started with If you started with the JP: "WTF why did they make Frieren sound like a grandma this is so weird" If you started with the EN: "eheheheheeee she sounds nice"

Frieren and Fern both chose magic specifically because it was something that they could use to make the ones around them happy. You are gonna miss out on a lot of detailing if you aren't able to pick up on the indirect messaging the story is giving its audience. Although that isn't anything new for most reactors. They tend to only look at the surface level and not understand the indirect and deeper meaning of the series. A 2nd time rewatch helps out a lot though since you are given all the context and basic detailing of the story. I still think you are trying to look at it a bit too much on the side of a typical shonen jump anime. This is not a shonen jump anime like MHA, JJK, DBZ etc.... I guess its best summed up as a fantasy that delves into psychological emotional stuff with some action thrown in.

I think the situation with Frieren and Fern's motivation for magic is a lot simpler and spelled out. She started collecting random little folk spells because it impressed Himmel and the hobby stuck because it reminds her of him. Fern chose magic over anything else because Heiter praised her first spell with the illusory butterflies. And it stuck, becoming defining. They're both doing magic not for power, but out of affection for loved ones.

Frieren means „to freeze“ or „to be cold“ in German. Himmel means „sky“ or „heaven“. Heiter means „jolly“ or „jovial“ Eisen (the dwarfs name) means „iron“ Fern is the plant in English, but means „far away“ in German.

So interesting to see Frieren and Heiter's interactins this episodes. Her crying so that Heiter would make as many memories as possible before he dies reflects so much on her feeling that she did not make enough memories with Himmel before he died. She doesn't want Heiter to repeat her mistake.

A way to keep track of time in this show is Fern's age. She was born eleven years after Himmel's death in the pilot episode, and it will say how long it's been after that event at the start of each episode. So just subtract that number by eleven and you'll know how long it's been, as well as Fern's age. For example, after Heiter's death this episode, it says it was 26 years after the death of Himmel the Hero, putting Fern at age 15.
