I found that the scariest aspect of Qual (admittedly canceled out by Frieren one-shotting him but ignoring that) was that he saw Fern cast the defensive spell once, listened to Frieren talk about how it came about, and then just casually cast it himself while stating that it was a complex bit of magic. It seemed as though he instantaneously learnt a spell that humans took 80 years to master, and then figured out its weakness in the same thought

Same with something Qual said this episode tho I'm not sure if it will be easy to figure out later with the different word choice. In the subbed he says "Frieren... My spell...". This line has potential significance later

And yeah everyone else already mentioned it but its important to take note of the little things that are said in the series because a whole lot isn't just laid out in your face just like the sour grapes thing that people are mentioning. The series is a masterpiece in the way that it has little things sprinkled throughout the series and they actually turn out to directly connect with other things as the series goes on. The sour grapes was important to Frieren for having as a spell because it is something she can do for Eisen since he likes sour grapes. At face value it isn't a worthwhile spell but this episode you find out that it is a super important spell to Frieren because its something she can do for her friend

There's a little moment that didn't get mentioned so figured I would bring it up here. Last episode there was a mention of Frieren learning a spell to make grapes sour, and this episode's flashback Eisen says sour grapes are his favorite food. It's another neat little nod that is hinting she might know more about her original companions that she realizes.

And with context from later episodes, it is like showing a child playing with a modern tablet pressing buttons with no knowledge of how or why it works, to the inventor of the first computers, back when a computer took up entire rooms with giant boxes. Qual was clowned on so hard.

I love Frieren's "casual walk" when she suggests they go for a treat. It's animated way more stiffly than her normal gait, like she's trying to be casual and kind of failing. It's such a little detail.

My favourite bit this episode is that Fern knew the killing magic, the spell that was the lifes work of one of the Elder Sages of Destruction, since her childhood and used that with 0 knowledge of what it was or where it came from.

The little details always throw me - Frieren picked the butterfly because it was Fern's first spell for Heiter, whose praise made her "somewhat" fall in love with magic. Frieren is /scary/ levels of thoughtful when it occurs to her to even try.
