Hanzo's point was that since Gon has been knocked unconscious, the rest of them fighting would be pointless if at the end of it all, Gon refuses the win. Hanzo simply assured that he was the loser in that fight because he was the one who surrendered. Not deep but that made Hanzo very honorable in my books.

The dub only got one side of Hanzo’s comment at the end where as there is a reason as to why Kurapika, Hisoka and others had that interesting reaction to his accusation. Spoilers: He implies that with Gon being the first fight and with how he won’t give up, if he had killed Gon he would have been disqualified also rendering this whole tournament useless. Further implying that while Netero knew Gon’s character and still made the rules that way. This entire tournament bracket was entirely made to test Gon and him alone. It’s why Kurapika, Hisoka and others had their eyes closed to that comment.

I'm not even sure it was that. I think he _would_ have been willing to kill Gon - if he thought i would make a difference. But as things stood, Hanzo pretty much would have killed him for nothing, because Gon still would not have given up, so Hanzo would just be disqualified

Hey Kenny and Montana! Did you guys notice when Leorio and Kurapika were super angry at Hanzo when he was torturing Gon? Leorio said, "don't try to stop me Kurapika. If that b****rd does anything else, Gon will fail the exam, cause I won't be able to stop myself." To which Kurapika replied to Leorio, "Me? You think I will stop you? Don't worry, there's no chance of that!" While Kurapikas Scarlett eyes were flaring up red. I hope you guys noticed this moment of the episode from 14:14 timestamp. This moment highlights the stark bond Gon has with Kurapika and Leorio. So much so that they two were down to give up this years exam by avenging Gon by dealing with Hanzo. Gon did carry them out of the cave after all. (Please don't mind me saying all this stuff. This is one of my favorite shows and I really wish you guys get the full excitement and enjoyment out of it talking over no moments or details, Kenny and Montana.)

Interesting that the writer togashi made in my opinion the best tournament arc of all time in his previous work yu yu hakusho but did something entirely different with hunter x hunter. Can't wait for you guys to see more!

The first episode ends with Gon literally leaping head first into danger, jumping off the boat to save the sailor kid. He 100% only survived that because Leorio and Kurapika were there to catch him, but it was a pretty early hint at his almost suicidal lack of self preservation instincts. This fight I think is another good example of that, taking the whole "surrender is worse than death" idea a little too close to the edge.

Indomitable willpower in the face of impossible odds is certainly also a valuable trait for a Hunter, and this was a good way to test that (at least for Gon anyway).

For killua he would have less potential overall since he is way more trained and experienced than Gon, whereas Gon still has a lot of room left. Also Hanzo hit Gon with the one punch man knockout

This episode is the start of a really interesting theme to me. And it's the audience and gon working out the he was a big fish in a very small pond on whale island and it's awesome to see someone as young and stubborn as gon grapple with that realisation

I’ve always thought that the tournament was a way to make the applicants know their limits in terms of how much pain they can take till they finally give up and how much willpower they have to get what they want. I also see it as a way to show what hunters go through during their endeavors. Sometimes they things they ‘hunt’ will be worth the pain and suffering they’ll go through and sometimes it’s not worth it and they’ll have know when to stop.

You mentioned an episode or two ago about how this is togashi's (the writer) seco d series and so he's able to do things differently. It's interesting because in his first series yuyu hakusho, there was a VERY long tournament arc and so this time around he flipped it on its head.

Just to give you a rough timeline, the first of the upcoming Demon Slayer movies is coming in July, but that's likely the theater release date for Japan. It'll come overseas in September, and then it'll be a few more months for it to come to streaming.

This tournament is made so people with over whelming strength wouldn't necessarily win against people with overwhelming willpower . This tournament in my opinion is much more fair then if it was the plain anime troupe of who is the strongest. Especially when you learn what comes later on in the anime about what it means to be a hunter.
