This is a bit of a spoiler for next episode but I don't think that's right. Basic magic is not objectively weaker. It's weaker in context of the modern era because the shield spell so easily tanks the spell but it doesn't handle physical objects well. But zirtik, and especially the version Frieren and Fern use, can be devastating and quick. In a world without defensive magic it's stronger. That's why the sage of destruction that used it was so fear for his time. They explain later that mages is a less about who is more powerful and more about a rock paper scissors game and I think that goes for strength of spells too.

As you just said the concept in the show is completely fictional. So calling it a hologram is not wrong either. Yes the word clone is used in the show. It doesn't mean that's the only word that can be used. And a hologram might help people visualize or understand the concept better in a conversation outside the show. When someone says "clone" most expect a biological organism and we do not know if these clones are that. I am notnsaying they aren't clones. I am simply saying why the reactors would use a different word when trying to conceptualize it and its valid.

So basic offensive magic is definitely weaker than most spells. Everyone keeps commenting about how it's a simple spell and not very strong. Frerin has the philosophy of everyone in this error is so weak you only need this to beat them.

That’s literally just stuff you made up. Clones in the sense of an exact copy of someone is completely fictional and as such there is no correct way for a clone to work. A clone can split from a body and stick around after death and it can also just appear where the creator wants it to and disappear when they want it to. Both are valid. Land himself calls it a clone but Kenny seemed to get confused and think it was limited to just taking damage to trick and opponent so I clarified that it’s a fully capable other him.

An actual clone will leave a body and not just dissolve. At least in my mind. Describing them as holograms seem fair. Especially hard light holograms

I did not expect to come out of this arc liking almost every single mage. This show is such a good comfort show. Even wotb shows i love like the owl house there is usually a few characters that annoying me. And that can be fun good but this show is just calm and everyone has a point

I think Scharf's homemade 'turn flowers into metal that you can then metalbend' spell is highly underrated. He ises the same field of flowers spell that Frieren uses and then just makes very versatile weapons out of them.

Fern's use of basic offensive and defensive magic reminds me of Zenitsu only knowing one form of Thunder Breathing. Both only have one move, but are the freaking BEST at them.
