Frieren is not the collector, she is a Storage Wars auctioner

I actually think it might be the same barrier spell Flamme used to protect that town back with Aura. Which is still incredibly impressive magic, but I don't think she was actively holding it up.
Joshua Foster
Especially since she is suppressing her mana and they cannot detect the fluctuations - So not only do they see a random elf the see an ordinary one

*Denken. Denki is Kaminari's first name in MHA.

so fun thing for you guys to do, would be to play BG3. On Console they have split screen co-op so it's a great option of you guys both wanted to try dnd.

If we’re going by DnD analogy then Serie is just a classic (boomer) high elf. She’s lived for so long that she’s become static and out of touch. She didn’t go defeat the Demon King because to her the only true normal state of the world is one of constant war and conflict. Why usher in an era of peace when she’s perfectly comfortable with the way things are.

Denki said he was out of mana but not these hands

Eye rolling that scene is completely justifiable and that's basically what her reaction was. I did it myself. Youbcan apperiate the cool moment and also just scoff at the "manly man is man cause manly man punch like man, yay man" moment.

same but it just seems to me Montana was in a bad mood today probably why the negative reaction

For someone like Frieren, the journey is the magic. It's not just about the destination or collecting as many powerful spells as possible, it’s about experiencing the world, learning, growing, and finding meaning through that process. Being handed a spell from Serie would feel like skipping all the struggles and moments of growth that define who she is. It's like being given the answers to a test—it might get you the grade, but you miss the point of learning. It’s the same thing in real life. You can have all the talent in the world—be the top recruit, the number one draft pick—but if you take shortcuts, like using steroids, it cheapens the legacy. Compare that to someone who wasn't even on the radar, who grinds for years, works harder than everyone else, and earns their spot at the top. That story hits different. It’s more inspiring, more human. Not everyone wants to make the easy wish. For some people, the struggle, the persistence, the slow and meaningful journey—that’s the real reward. Being handed everything might seem like a blessing, but for people like Frieren (and honestly, a lot of us), it would feel empty. Because what’s the point of reaching the top if you skipped the part that teaches you who you are?

reminder: frieren picked up her love of collecting random weird spells cuz Himmel praised her. She probably picked up a bunch along the way, but she wasn't an ACTIVE collector during her time with Flamme; she was a powerhouse that was being trained to kill

Loved the family guy cutaway to stark

I think you’ve forgotten why Frieren’s party is taking the exam in the first place. They have the same problem as Denken.

While Frieren loves collecting spells she's also not searching for any specific spell. She just enjoys the journey of studying and searching out magic. So it makes total sense she would turn down the offer. There is no specific spell she wants.

And what, pray tell, was that reaction? Cause I was confused as well.
kristianc00
I also don't think frieren actually wants any spells I feel like adventuring and then running into these spells and learning them like that is what she enjoys
Soup in Boots
With respect to the acquisition of magic and the "journey vs. destination" debate, Montana's view makes a lot more sense if you have a limited lifespan, like a human. Frieren has no such limitations, and thus no urgency -- she can take as much time as she wants. Why take a shortcut when the views along the way are so enjoyable? Denken having the same view is more surprising, but I think he comes to it in a different way. Maybe I'll elaborate on that in later episodes.

You don’t understand her reaction :) sorry that somehow upset you
Cen Alvi
She's doing fine. She's reacting "live" so of course she wouldn't get the time to like understand or deep-dive on the stipulations of the characters' actions immediately you know which feels great because the reaction is raw essentially. Plus characters can be very multi-faceted too so like they can have "bad" side and still be well liked.

i love and hate this channel... im so on board with 99% of it but sometimes Montana just has the most negative, idc reaction. Let those men be stubborn and let Denkin be a man without looking down it :,(
H-Bomb 24
"I'm outta mana, but I ain't outta options!"
H-Bomb 24
With how obsessed Montana is with Frieren, she should TOTALLY do her hair like the character for a reaction. Maybe in the finale? 🤞
H-Bomb 24
Denken's disregard for the Privilege also reminds me of what Viktor eventually learned in Arcane. "There is no prize to perfection. Only an end to pursuit."
H-Bomb 24
Richter feat of raising the earth is actually CRAZY. Did we ever see Toph do anything of that scale in Avatar? I have no doubt she COULD, but I don't know if we ever saw her do anything like that.

37:00 - One thing I would add to that - Imagine someone called Churchill is taking an exam in your class, would you immediately think oh wait, is it THAT Churchill? It's the Clark Kent effect. It is hard to see someone if you don't expect to see them. I don't think the proctors expected the actual legendary mage Frieren to be there, to them she was just some random elf, until they see her break the barrier.
David Bodor
I think they missed Flamme saying - Someone who seeks battle cannot defeat the demon king - hence why neither Flamme nor Serie could do it.
Anthony Flenniken
Kenny is familiar with mage hand, but is familiar with Denken's special spell Mage Hands.
Big Fuze
Also crazy how much the barrier is a flex for serie, she was able to put up a massive barrier that blocks literally everything, keeping it up for days, and after putting it up just going back to where every her tower is and chilling, with the fact only frieren could break it
Big Fuze
Also one thing to consider for why serie didn’t stop the demon king, conflict forces progress with life or death stakes. If she wants new magic’s to add to he knowledge of course she wouldn’t mind a little war to force humans and demons to advance. From her already high status in the world, keeps a tab on the goings on in the world of magic, and learning the new advancements
Phantom Egg
I appreciate the hype manning and the faith in Frieren but Frieren has told us she has lost before so I wouldn't go in to every encounter with 100% full confidence lol. I haven't read the manga either but I think its bold to assume that Frieren is stronger than Serie. Especially given Serie is Frieren's master's master and therefore likely has more experience and time on her side and a clearly stronger ambition for knowledge acquisition and strength over Frieren's curiosity and hobby of magic collection. In the same way its bold of the adjudicator of the test to assume that no mage is strong enough to break any of Serie's spells. But like I said, I appreciate the respect and faith in our MC haha.
David Camacho
Yes but they state it in the anime as well .

Is this because of the Manga?

I got to say this arc made me genuinely enjoy every mage. Even the murderer and Rictor who I expected to dislike. They all have different philosophies of magic but it's easy to see their point and ideas. Wirbel is a practical mercenary who has no qualms about killing when needed but only when needed. Denke seems to have a lot of Frieren's opinions and is confident in bis own power but not over condifendent. Before unleashing the firetornado he said his only chance is to win instantly or he's done forand accepted that. Rictor is a bit smug but not too much. Really just practical he has a goal and is willing to do anything to get it. I think he shows the modern mage whereas denke and frieren are the pre hero party mindset. I also think an element to spells that frieren enjoys is that you can make spells yourself but it takes time to understand and stuff. And with the tomes she uses they teach her the spell but also the magicalnscience behind the spell. This arc shows the different. Between more academic magic and folk magic being less specific and I thibk frieren goes for folk magic becuase it's less studied and refined by it's nature and so she studies it. Like series was offering her a calculator but she prefers doing it by hand.
David Camacho
Serie is stronger than frieren

It's weird. They started this back in November, but it does NOT feel that long. 😭

Let’s go it’s a Friday

Damn I will miss Frieren Fridays when the season is done
H-Bomb 24
I find the fact of Ubel, sultry and murderous sociopath that she is, being so offput by Fern's "see-through-clothes" spell very funny. 🤣

This was the episode Denken became a fan favorite character.
