The reveal of nen really contextualises a lot of the things we saw previously in the series. The first examiner could run for over 2 marathons straight without tiring, because Ten has strengthened his body. Hisoka can kill with playing cards because he uses Nen to strengthen them into razors. Netero could take Killua and Gon's attacks without blocking because Ten was protecting his body. Hisoka and Illumi have used Ren to intimidate them. Zebro uses Ren to increase his strength to open the Testing Gate.

Finally! HxH really pulled me in after Nen got introduced. Nen is widely considered to be in the top 3 (if not the #1) anime power system. So many anime’s take inspiration from HxH. I’m excited to see if you recognize similarities from shows you’ve already seen.

Hisoka did actually use nen in the hunter exam. He used it to make his cards lethal weapons and when he was expressing his bloodlust on the island and nearly scared gon off he was expressing malicious aura

Those two are the equivalent of someone who would stay out in freezing temperatures until they became hospitalised to prove they're strong, hisoka realised their "bravery"(read dumbassery/stupidity) and stopped them risking serious harm or death🤷 I love that detail tbh, like regardless of anything else he does care for gon(at leasts) wellbeing and doesn't want him genuinely harmed(or worse)

Relating Nen to Cursed Energy is spot on. Cursed Energy took A LOT of its ideas from Togashi's Nen, but honestly a lot of anime's power systems are at least somewhat inspired by Nen, it's one of the Gold Standards of power systems in anime.

To clear up some confusion regarding the kanji used in Wing's explanation of Nen (No spoilers): 燃 (nen), the first kanji Wing uses, means burn/blaze, and is often used in compounds associated with fire, fuel, and being fired up (emotionally). It isn't actually a part of HxH's power system or anything; Wing was just trying to get the boys to strengthen themselves mentally/spiritually in general. 念 (nen), the true kanji he reveals after, means idea/thought/sense, and is used for many different psychological concepts like (信念 shinnen, faith/conviction), (残念, zannen, disappointing/regrettable) or (疑念 ginen, doubt/suspicion). This is the one that has a specific meaning within the HxH universe, and is related to the power system. This subtext is a lot more obvious to viewers who know the kanji and the meanings associated with them, and gets lost in translation because they're simply homophones that don't mean anything to the English ear. HxH's power system is pretty simple, so if you think you're overthinking it, you probably are. It's just Nen, with some extra details you find out later. Source: Fluent in Japanese and I literally translate anime/manga/games for a career.

I think since the hunter exam was more based on if someone could withstand and do dangerous things with a slight care of who actually lives to pass regardless if you do or don't use nen, so now that they need to actually learn nen it kinda makes since coming from the fact Gon lived on wale island not knowing anything but just his dad left him to go do the Hunter exam not knowing he needed to also know nen was expected do to the lack of information his aunt Mito knew of and well the authors view for the viewers. Or that's my take on the first question lol

Y'all are forgetting that that gon basically grew up in the mountains his entire life which absolutely added to his up bringing. Just because he wasn't trained like killua doesn't mean he didn't have a up bringing that wasn't tough for the average person . You gotta remember he basically trained his entire life in a environment less then normal to grab a fish that about equal to a full grown whale shark as a child.
