Let y'all know that Aleks Le voice thorfinn
Delinda Arts
SO excited to see you guys' journey with Askeladd

Opinions of French military history is usually a good way to gauge whether someone's knowledge of history extends beyond WW2 or not. WW2 in Europe represents the foundational basis of the modern societal order so everyone knows a decent amount about it. A small percentage of people know any history besides that.

Wait, THAT'S IIDA?! Oh my gosh, that is hilarious. 🤣🤣 I had no idea Tatum had that kind of range; I loved that guy this episode. 😂

Fun Fact: The crazy looking French commander that Throfinn calls fat ass. He’s voiced by J Michael Tatum, who is also the voice of Ida from My Hero and Erwin from AOT. He’s one of my favorite voice actors!

If you like Aleks Lee make sure to pay attention to the voices when you get to season 2! There’s a different dub that uses different voice actors, it should be the same. But if the voice doesn’t sound like Aleks then you’ve got the wrong one. As much as I’m a bit annoyed with the Solo Leveling fanbase following the anime awards, I must admit that Aleks Lee is great. He deserved English voice actor of the year, and he does an amazing job as Thorfinn. He’s come a long way from annoying Zenitsu lol.

Regarding the “this actually happened” comment, that statement is a bit skeptical. Although Vinland Saga does include a lot of historically accurate events. As well, people like Thorfinn and Leif Erickson (among other characters we’ll meet later) were real people. Some of the specific events like Thorfinn joining a group of pirates that killed his father, are largely fictitious. Of course these events took place a thousand years ago, so we can’t be certain. However, after looking into the history after watching the show, the prevailing opinion is that Vinland Saga takes some large historical liberties.

I know it's just a fun "meme" but the French army was not cowardly. They damn near conquered Europe under Napoleon & in World War 1 were a huge part of defeating Germany. The more ya knw & all that

Noted! Will pause and read

. I in no way mean this to be rude I know you guys have issues trying to read when your watching something for the first time but stuff like the year and the kingdom their currently in can be pretty important in this show so maybe if it’s not to much trouble pause the episode and read those captions when they show up.

That's actually kind of a good point as to why some of the characters, like Thorfinn, get "anime logic" to their fighting ability. Like, sure most of the fighting is depicted fairly realistically, but the more important characters and especially the heroes and villains get to have larger than life capabilities because that's just how hero stories were/are told.

Its just too damn peak to wait

Vinland Saga does such a good job of making the characters cool when fighting but also conveying how wrong their actions are. Like you can't deny that Thorfinn jumping onto the fort is extremely badass but its also so brutal watching him kill them
Juan Solo
I think Askeladd sees how valuable Thorfinn is as a scout/fighter and gladly takes advantage of his one-track mind whenever he wants. Though it wouldn't surprise me if deep down he's grown to see him as a sort of protégé (in his own twisted way).
Juan Solo
"If I kill my enemy, will I finally be free?" — Thorfinn, probably
Juan Solo
I guess you could say that like the vikings... they're built different 😏
Juan Solo
Back before I started the show, when I saw a clip of this episode, an old friend of mine who was a fan said the general was drawn/animated cartoonish to show how he wasn't to be taken seriously (compared to Askeladd who has proven to be an effective leader).
Letts React
nah we arent haha we think they're cool, but Vinland Saga is kinda just like with aot though where it isnt just fight=cool, its pretty horrible whats going on to the character doing it
PianoMan!
I beg you please release two Vinland saga episodes a week. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Monster FAME
It’s anime just enjoy the badass fight scenes y’all so judgmental towards battles and fights

The Vinland Sagas the series is based on are records of historical events but they’re still part of a Norse storytelling tradition. The manga/show reflects that having both meticulously researched historical details alongside heroic feats. Carrying ships between waterways was common but generally involved more dragging across rolling logs than dramatically running into battle with it like mad men.
Lettuce Pray
Vikings transported their ships overland to get past difficult stretches of water. Smaller ships would be carried by hand using poles, while larger ships would be pulled across tree branches. To trade with Turks, they would carry their boats 10km overland to get to the Black Sea.

Askeladd is such a fascinating portrayal of a antagonist. The show doesn't try to hide the fact that this guy is an utter b****rd. At the same time, he's also a tactical genius that we can't help but admire when his plans work, and he's even a pretty funny guy. And that's not even going into the nonchalant way he interacts with the MC who thoroughly wants him dead. Askeladd could've killed Thorfinn or let him die a long time ago, but the fact he keeps him around is so baffling, yet ingenious in a sort of twisted way. I feel like we're gonna constantly go back and forth about how to feel about this guy throughout the series.

Oh, the dog imagery fits very well! Didn‘t make that connection before

it was France they are in, this episode
Cyan_SkyAnfall
I'm glad Montana brought up stockholm syndrome, thats something Ive been wanting to ask about in the time skip episodes.
HBelmont 24
Not a bad example of starting the story in medias res.
Historia-Europa
Yes carrying boats is very much possible, its a tactic that was used a few times in actual historical warfare
Branch haver
This was actually chapter 1 in the manga and sets up thorfinn and askeladds dog/master relationship before jumping back to how the show starts. I think it slots nicely here too
HBelmont 24
What are Viking longboats made of?? They're light enough for a group to lift them overland, yet sturdy enough to take the punishment of going over a waterfall? 😵💫
Lyrical Kell of Music
I love askeladd so much, such a cool character
Shinji
I love how Montana is starting to want revenge as much as Thorfinn lol
HBelmont 24
I've always thought Vinland Saga's character was kinda Ghibli-esque, and the Frank general is a GREAT example of this. Compared to everyone else, he's a cartoon. 🤣
HBelmont 24
Good ol' Aleks Le. 😁 Two times now he's voiced dual wielding anime protagonists. ⚔️

Another absolutely banging episode
