The backstory in the manga begins at the end of chapter 2 (episode 8). It is during the conversation outside on the ship between Thorfinn and the slave girl where he tells her about Vinland. That is where the manga tells the events of epsidoes 1-6.

As someone pointed out, the sailor reacting that way to the blonde slave was because he thought it was thorfinn (who he promised the mom he would find) for a moment. The family is still in Iceland.
