In the flashback, we see that Kikoru’s mother had planned on being the “tough love” parent to make sure she was strong enough to survive in the defense force, and wanted Isao to be the one to spoil her with love. Since she died early fighting against number 6 and wasn’t able to do that, do you think Isao was right to take her place and raise Kikoru with a “strength and results above all” mentality?

Given the shocking and horrifying move by Kaiju No. 9 at the end of the episode, how do you expect the Defense Force to respond to such a development? How do you think Kikoru will react?

We're given more backstory to the Shinomiyas this episode, and shown that after his wife's death, Isao decided to pick up the reins of teaching his daughter Kikoru to be a Defense Force officer in her place, opting to act more like an instructor than a parent since there was only one of them now. Does this recontextualize how you see their interactions in season one, as well as Isao's character?
