Okay so I noticed you brought up yu yu hakusho. I really do think you should watch it (in that it's really good for different reasons). You are...half right about it being somewhat more straightforward, but you sort of see the birth of the idea of nen in it in the later part of the series where there's more powers that are less straightforward and require more than brute strength to deal with. Actually there's a lot you'll see that you can link to hxh in some ways. I do highly suggest watching it, if only for the fact that it basically perfected tournament arcs to.

"You've lost interest, but we're going to continue later...?" A truly inconceivable concept. I, for one, know that any time I decide I've had my fill of an activity for the day, I instantly forget about it and never return to that activity ever again in my life.

Yu Yu hakusho is exactly what you think it is. But there’s an air of nostalgia in that series that makes it stand out from the rest. Please give it a watch after this!

Another thing to think of is yes pito killed kite and we didn't get to see it but honestly if you did in the beginning like that it almost feels like it be unsatisfying because we still haven't even seen meruem's and the build up for each ant and or character in general is amazingly written fight wise but even emotionally/mentally!! It's sad but I love it

I feel like it is maybe worth pointing out that Meruem surrendering "early" in the game is meant to be a sign of respect. He's calculating very far in advance, and once he has (in his mind) lost he surrenders because he doesn't operate under the assumption that the Gungi Master is going to make a mistake. Sure it might take 30+ moves to play it out in full, but once Meruem determined that the game had ended he ends the game. He sort of pointed to this attitude a few episodes back when playing the Shogi champion, where he was angry the guy kept playing after the game was "already over"; he considered it an insult that the human would think that he might mess up. It's an interesting aspect to his character I think that he has a very rigid and logical way of a viewing things, but also he doesn't come off as the petty tyrant as much as one might expect. Especially coupled with the end scene where he admits to being excited about how much he is being challenged.

To your hypothesis, yes...yu yu hakusho does indeed stick to more traditional shonen where you get more full fights. That said, I SOOOO hope yall do react to it one day. It's a great show!!
