I loved your talk about the similarities between the dinner-table conversation in Black and Italian homes. The ideas of representation, of public image. My dad is a second-generation Italian who did his best to become like Melfi's ex, with mixed results. And for that reason he's never seen The Sopranos; he knows these people, hates them, wants to insist he's nothing like them. And yet, he's so much like a (non-violent) Tony it blows my mind. Everyone he knew growing up had some relationship to a mob-type-character. College let my dad escape, but his family has never forgiven him.
