Hey Carl, you can get a lid for a bucket that you can put an airlock on that will let the gas escape and not let anything in, you can find that at any home brew supply, online or brick and mortar. In leu of that you could put some cheese cloth or muslin on top secured with string or a rubber ban and that will keep dust/critters out and will let the gas escape. One last tip, you really want the ambient temp while fermenting to be as low as possible, anywhere from 45-65 degs, this will ensure that you don’t have any harsh flavors or esters that can make hooch undrinkable. You can homebrew wine/mead in one of those big glass jugs and pull a condom over the top and rubber band it in place. allows the gas to expand without stinking/ spidering.
