Love the discussion of non-geographic team allegiances. I think about this stuff a lot as someone who grew up in Arizona. Arizona has all the pro sports team but none of them have a history or fan base. Also, almost everyone who lives in Arizona wasn’t born there. So growing up, almost no one I knew actually rooted for the local teams. I grew up in the height of the Kobe era and every kid I knew was a Laker fan. For football, people were Cowboys, Steelers, or Packers. Makes sense that people will always gravitate to teams with national brands. Branding is way more important than geographic proximity in pretty much any place that doesn’t have a die hard local sports culture. That being said, I don’t think the Chiefs have that strong of a brand even with all the recent success. But it’s true, that kids are front runners so maybe kids today will grow up Chiefs fans but doesn’t seem likely.
