Hi Kurzgesagt! I love your videos, I often share them with my friends and colleagues and talk about them all the time. :) But this particular video seems to contain an unusual number of unsupported claims and logical leaps - which contrasts starkly with your other well-researched and well-argumented videos. (I've seen the others about the Fermi paradox and I'm a huge science-fiction fan, so I give this topic a lot of thought). 1) The development of civilizations symbolized by the staircase as a universal principle - we cannot possibly know that. We are generalizing only from one example - us humans. Also, a civilization might walk the staircase DOWN (for example colonizing other planets and then for some reason becoming confined to these planets). Or they might stagnate on a single step. 2) The great filter doesn't have to be the same for all civilizations and may just be pure chance - one civilization could have been wiped out by a nuclear war, the other by an asteroid, another by polluting their atmosphere, etc. Each civilization faces destruction and the longer it's around, the more dangers it has to overcome, naturally. 3) The fact that we have not yet detected another civilization may not be due to its non-existence. We simply may not be able to detect them, or we can detect them but don't know that these are signs of a civilization alien to us. 4) The discovery of remains of another civilization or of life elsewhere doesn't tell us anything of the position of our great filter - maybe the fishes on Titan didn't get there yet - maybe the Martians were wiped out by chance - or they might have been behind us in evolution. There is a very small probability of one singular event that destroys every civilization. Our history is so incredibly complex and sometimes depends on individuals and/or chance - it's only logical to assume that this would be the same for any other complex civilization. Nevertheless, be that as it may - please don't stop making videos and I won't stop sharing them, thinking about them and talking about them! <3

Another excellent video! A potential bit of hope: if we do encounter a space-faring civilization who made it through the great filter that's in front of us, might they not tell us what it is, so that we could avoid it?
