NEW VIDEO: 1,000km Cable to the Stars - The Skyhook
🕑 Added 2019-11-17 13:33:46 +0000 UTCGetting to space is incredibly hard, expensive and needs a lot of resources. A more efficient way to get there is a Skyhook (or Spacetether), an ever rotating cable with a counter weight, that catapults spaceships from earth orbit into the depths of space.

Isaac Arthur might be another place to look at. He usually gives sources in the description, and he goes more in depth on how it can be used

No, the compression works regardless of which direction you're travelling. It's dependent on speed.

Does that mean upon leaving, the shuttle's going to freeze up?
Great video as always!

Genius idea and brilliant video. Would you mind giving some of the resources you used to research the topic?

Whoops... The heat from re-entry isn't from friction - it's from compression. When a fast-moving object hits the atmosphere, it compresses the air in front of it, which heats it up through the same principles that make refrigeration work.

As of May 2013, all mechanical tethers (orbital and elevators) are on hold until stronger materials are available.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_tether]. Apparently the Japanese tested a related concept in 2010.
This is the coolest thing I've heard of since space elevators
