Episode 24.5: Spy Kids 3D
🕑 Added 2022-01-12 00:56:40 +0000 UTCSo, a few months ago we invited friend of the show Tom Walker on to discuss the movie Spy Kids 2. This time, since we're going bigger and bolder for the sequel, we thought hey- why not bring on Demi too?
What we forgot is that putting the two together completes one of the funniest and most powerful chaos runes known to mankind.

i've been listening to the patreon backlog at work and had to tap out of this one bc the christoph waltz haplogroup digression made me laugh so hard i almost threw up
Jon, it hurts
ngl im kind of confused by the shock at the character being described as "physically disabled" and saying thats a less delicate way to describe him, from what i understand disabled people tend to prefer just being called disabled instead of euphemisms for it bc thats what they are. at least from what i can remember of this movie they handled the disabled character fairly well, apparently the role was specifically created for the actor playing him who is in a wheelchair in real life. the spy kids series has consistently felt very earnest in its attempts at representation and i think its rly nice. and the director sincierely tries (and succeeds imo) to make these movies very much For Kids, like he described the process of making spy kids 1 as trying to make a movie for kids that felt like it was made by kids. which i think is why some of u talked about remembering these movies as being fucking great as a kid but not as much now. a lot of movies that are made specifically to be appealing to kids are soulless garbage and the spy kids movies never feel that way which makes me honestly quite fond of them still. it feels like the writer/director actually respects children, which is not all that common in childrens media

Purely for my own reference: Demi talking about Tom's dad is at 13:25

I am listening to this at work and had to tap out because I'm crying from trying not to laugh. 10/10
i had my jaw slack the entirety of this episode. i know for a fact i have seen this movie before, but i only remember the glasses letting them see the robots at the end and the cracked pair being given, and the phrase "game over" being said multiple times. listening to the five of you go off about everything was truly a life changing experience, my brain is now completely wiped clean and i am head empty no thoughts right now. the state of euphoria i am in is utterly indescribable, thank you alice, abi, devon, tom, and demi.

Just waiting for the crossover where the "Physically disabled" drop plays at the end of a WTYP casualty list

Demi's impression of Tom's dad had me literally collapsed on the ground in laughter. This is the best money I spend each month.

I'd politely disagree. At that time I was playing Counterstrike amongst other things and slurs were absolutely a thing there. Likewise Everquest.
RIGHT DOWN TO THE BETA TESTERS BEING INSANELY OP????

"The Prophecy has been fulfilled" - oh no, Serial Experiments Lain is leaking...

This may have been the best episode yet Truly, the insanity of the hosts and off topic meanderings matched the insanity of the movie itself, like the Power Rangers jumping into the Megazord in equal response to the (literally) growing threat of Rita Repulsa’s abomination of the week
Also, a little disappointed that they rushed the end and glazed over both Clooney’s Stallone impression and how telegraphed Gerty saying “Everyone’s your family” is for the ending.
“Rayne… -pregnant pause- who is still on thin ice.” Love you too, Dev!

I know the thumb-people didn’t feature in this one, but nonetheless: https://twitter.com/YassifyBot/status/1465455994797006860

Btw: The slurs by 10 year old experience started with xbox live. Before that it was pretty tame. That and in 2001 online games were limited to chat only due to the connection. Diablo 2 online was a pretty nice experience.

Ideally the guest would be someone only capable of extremely cringe mispronunciations of French. (Is it Justin Roczniak or Liam Anderson who is better at this? Butchering French is a particular cultural specialty of the American Midwest.)
Elsie Hupp
I dunno if the hosts read this, but the story here made me think of a comparison to the French version of this movie, "La Cité des enfants perdus" (1995), which is much, much better. Would a review of "The City of Lost Children" be within the scope of the bonus episodes for this podcast?

Demi is the most feral, chaotic creature in the universe and she is truly Tom's greatest curse and blessing.

Didn’t expect Jerk Vanderklerk to make an appearance.
