S2E29.5: Serpico
🕑 Added 2023-08-10 07:46:01 +0000 UTCAs a companion piece to Cop Land, we're looking at the true story of what happened to NYC corruption whistleblower Frank Serpico. In this Biopic he's played by a young Al Pacino and Devon is going entirely feral about it

THE MOVIES ARE ON STRIKE!
SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are both on strike for a number of reasons, from pay for streaming residuals, to the rights to own your own appearance, to the right to not have AIs trained off your work.
So if you've got a few spare pennies, why not chip in to help keep movies from becoming Shit Forever.

And if you're in the UK, the UCU could still do with some help

To riff on Devon's joke, The post credits scene at the end of iron man but instead of Nick Fury it's Giuseppe Garibaldi

32:30 on... Serpico is 'A Thousand Clowns'

Serpico IS ALIVE. He is a beatific old hippie. Spent his life out there trying to de-program LEO's

Yes! I mean, there was the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, the CIA’s Family Jewels, etc.! It was very much in the cultural zeitgeist, hence the popularity of the conspiracy thriller in the decade!

had to google Serpico fancam while listening and found this absolute banger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e7is1FsB4Y

Was whistle blowing a major thing in the 70s? Because I do remember seeing Silkwood on TV multiple times as a young person. I think the being scrubbed hard with a brush scene really stuck with me.

https://youtu.be/jYLRDYWzWh4 Supercut of Serpico‘s mostly weird hats

As the resident Annoying Italian @Abi: can confirm we are a horrendously corrupt nation and it's impossible to get anything done about it.
Claudia
It's also true that absolutely EVERYTHING in Italy is run incompetently.
Helen W.
Frankly, I'd go so far as to say that it's a good movie on its own merits!
Jon W
It has a lot to say about masculinity

I'm sorry but Demolition Man is a GREAT Stallone movie.
Tove
This might be the best episode thus far goddamn.
Michael Kelly
Genuinely thought when Abigail said 'alt-Stallon', we were going to get 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot'.

For the information of Devon - the white hat with the pins is a sailor's hat with the brim turned down. You can buy them for peanuts at costume & disposals stores

The thing you always hear whenever police corruption gets in the news is that it's just a few bad apples, completely ignoring the second half of the saying where the bad apples make all the other apples around them bad. With apples it's because they give off chemicals that speed the rot of the apples around them, and with cops it's because they constantly try to drag everyone into their corruption. It even felt like Serpico would've been perfectly happy being the only non-corrupt cop in New York if the other cops would've just stopped pushing him on it, but the other cops treat the mere existence of a non-corrupt cop as a threat that has to be dealt with one way or the other.

Devon does a pretty good Pacino impression

I haven’t listened yet but do they mention Frank Serpico is active on Twitter? Anyway I once ate at the place Frank first met with press to leak stuff which was also the place Edward Albee got the title for Whose Afraid Of Virginia Woolf from the bathroom graffiti
Spencer Moore
Got that sailor hat with the brim pulled down

JFC. In his review for the Chicago Tribune Gene Siskel complained that the film "loses the perspective that corruption begins and ends with individuals making active and passive decisions about their conduct". What the fuck, Gene?

You guys should do an episode 29.75 where you watch the always sunny serpico episode

Years ago I read an essay, possibly by Umberto Eco, that made the point that in Italian academics it's considered a good career move to cultivate a reputation for incompetence. Because Italian academia is thoroughly corrupt and runs on graft, someone who is actually good at their job might rock the boat. So being known to be completely useless sends a signal to everyone around you that they can trust you to only work within the system, and ensures that you'll be included in the brotherhood.

JSYK, Devin, .NOW is apparently run by Amazon.

Noblesse Oblahaj
A cop with long hair and questionable facial hair dances, does drugs, and pisses off every cop around him while solving cases. He's just Harry DuBois. Al Pacino is the Disco Elysium

Also the Italians liked Serpico so much they made another movie based on him called The Cop in Blue Jeans. Judging by the poster they carried over the same wild taste in hats.

I'm so happy to hear that Demolition Man is the next bonus ep. It deserves a sequel, a shitty Netflix miniseries and a manga. Pure distilled dopamine.

Scrolling through the Serpico tag on Tumblr and I think my favorite fit so far is collarless shirt, leather vest, sailor's Dixie Cup hat turned down into a bucket hat with a little pin on it.

Understanding that brighton as a city does not have a reputation as being particularly cool for anyone outside brighton, it may please or displease certain parties to learn that you can observe all the above described fits in real life on the seafront in hove if you just hang out there for half an hour on a thursday afternoon

The red cord is an andon cord https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andon_(manufacturing). A commonly used term for the quality you look for in an organization is “psychological safety”. It is the perceived interpersonal risk. What bad can come from me sharing thoughts and ideas? There is a lot of stuff on the topic!

insanely keen for this one
