S3E2.5: The Consequences of Love

I was feeling like this movie was a lot more nuanced and complicated until we got to the ending which shows him being a badass. The thing with these sorts of Incel "Literally Me" type movies is that they always portray the sad lonely guy as being a secret badass in some way as a power fantasy for the viewer who relates to them. But a real sad lonely Incel isn't a badass, they're more like this dude is throughout the rest of the movie; living a boring, monotonous life, avoiding any social interactions, and being a very uninteresting and unskilled looser. I figured this movie would be more about that more real aspect of this sort of life, but by giving him this badass ending, you essentially give the Incel viewer a placebo of personal change and agency. You can't just do a single cool thing and make up for your wasted life, as if you are even going to get the chance to do something that extreme anyways. Breaking out of this self-repressive cycle takes time and effort, and it's not as exciting or cool as these stories tend to portray it as. I suppose you could argue that the film agrees with this, as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World does crash the car he gave her on a whim, the broke couple he gives the money to will probably end up gambling it away anyways, and the Mafia really don't care that much that he's done this, essentially eliminating any accomplishments he made, but I don't think that the Incel viewer is going to see that. A better example of this sort of wasted life/lonely man story I think is "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", which is pretty uncompromising in its depiction if this sort of guy. His fantasy accomplishments remain fantasies, he doesn't change, doesn't receive any redemption, and simply dies as sad and alone as he lived. I feel like that sort of depiction of this lifestyle and sort of person is a lot more realistic and impactful, as it doesn't give the same sort of placebo satisfaction that other films do.

Love to see some Sorrentino love. His movies are hit or miss for me but when I like them I -really- like them. I didn't love Loro, his two-part movie about Berlusconi, but I think you'd have some interesting things to say about it.

My immediate thought when you said there was something kind of english about this film went to The Remainder of the Day with Anthony Hopkins. Not sure if it's enough on theme/brand but it might lend itself to a cool discussion.
