Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live.

Playing catchup om this season. As a kid in the US, I was taught to respond to adults including parents and teachers with 'yes sir' and 'yes ma'am,' as a sign of respect. Not using appropriate greetings is a sign of poor home training and coild be grounds for disciplinary action.

Unfortunately "a bunch of short dudes who look alike" does describe many transmasc friend groups

I'm reading the novel "Godfather Returns", which has a storyline where Italian crooner Johnny Fontane has invited young Irish president to his Las Vegas mansion, which he has customized for his visit, around the time of a disastrous American-backed invasion of Cuba. In chapter 25, he destroys the helipad with TNT
BarFly
Silva, Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jr. reunited three years later in the film Johnny Cool, in which Davis looks the absolute coolest anyone has ever looked. Unfortunately we'll have to wait for noir/revenge season for the pod to cover it.
Andrew Dunn
Has everyone heard Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis' dirty comedy song "blow me (a kiss)?"
George Barker
All the mentions of 3 Kings, does that mean Kelly's Heroes is also on the table for wartime heist movies?
Adria Reed
I also thought Sammy Davis Jr was gay, and I know exactly where I got this idea. I’m curious if Abi might have gotten it from the same place. In the episode of Epic Rap Battles of History where Freddy Mercury battles Frank Sinatra, he says the line “I love the coloreds and the queers: just ask Sammy Davis”.
Thomas Stanley
In the 1960s being a bit fruity and wearing a baby blue romper was the straightest you could be. Being a big, burly muscle man meant you were flaming.
Kieron Peddle
I saw it on Mr Sunday Movies far too long ago and it was a sight to behold
Ineloquent Reverie
Den Of Thieves pod will either be the best or the worst one depending on how much the hosts understand that you aren’t actually supposed to like or idolize the cop protagonists

as the 1960s history hobbyist, i cannot think of anything from the period the Rat Pack would be satirizing with the remark about “repealing the 14th and the 20th Amendment”. The only vaguely connected thing I can think of is that JFK had promised to support an “equal rights amendment” around the time this was being filmed, which received pushback from labor, but the joke reads to me more as a “HOW ABOUT THEM BROADS” more than anything.
Freyr Aloysius
That father-child interaction with the "sir" shit sent a chill down my spine ngl
Just the Worst
The Maxim Gun, aka the Spinny Weezer Gun
Saint Muerte
That's such an underrated film. Good heart, good writing, and funny as hell.

So was he just locked out of his hotel room the whole time, since he gave away the key?
Chad Countiss
I really hope you watch Logan Lucky this season, if only because I remember Adam Driver's accent wandering off to some odd places sometimes.
Christine Pizan
When I read the plot of this film on wikipedia, as I am wont to do before listening to an episode, the ending made me think... surely they did not feel bound by Hays code restrictions in 1960? It was a dead letter by then!!
Tall Jeff
Millennials might know the song Mr. Booze from Family Guy and not know that it’s from Robin and the 7 Hoods, complete with practical effects. Unhinged and boring in that special rat pack way.
Kieron Peddle
I really hope they cover another Rat Pack movie. There was a Robin Hood one I reckon they would have an absolute field day with
Athena Von Tharsis
Thank you, fellow pedant.

Kelly's Heroes is an all-time favorite of mine I'd love it if KJB watched it. (I bet it would drive November insane with how fast and loose it plays with the army stuff).
7 Bitches In A Trench Coat
My parents Absolutely made me call them Sir and Ma'am and routinely threatened me with military academy for any minor infraction. There is No correlation between that, that I haven't spoken to my bio family in years, or that I call my Gf mommy
Moray Macdonald
I really hope so, they make such a good pairing. Both wartime heist films but one from a "fun" war and the other from a "bad" war
Jae H
If my children called me “sir” I’d say “oh, don’t *you* fucking start”
BarFly
I have a suggestion for Devon: sharp Sinatra-type suit, but with no sleeves.

Is a platonic polycule a platocule or a broacule? Comparing the energy in this episode to the end of euro-spy, I think youse should avoid doing movies for completeness. Only do a movie if youse are interested in it (love/hate) because then the show has energy and flow.
Skate Bush
Abi isn’t the first to think Sammy Davis Jr was gay. ERB made a joke about how fruity he was in their Frank Sinatra vs Freddie Mercury episode
Keith D. Jones
KJB had such wonderful things to say about Cesar Romero in this movie that I immediately went to YouTube and did a search. It showed me the scene where Cesar Romero visits Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in the hotel room. I think I can answer the “why didn’t they kill him” question. They tried. Watch that scene again. Sinatra spends most of the scene trying to sneak up behind Romero. His hand touches the bottle behind Romero’s head. Romero clocks it instantly and stands up, and that’s when I realized he had sat in the chair on purpose. He wanted to see if they would try to kill him, so he could show them they would never get the drop on him. Wonderful scene. I don’t know about the rest of the movie. I haven’t seen it.
James Rule
Dead Presidents, there's a movie I haven't heard people mention in a long time.
Something
November is mostly right, the US military did not desegregate until after WWII, but there was a brief period around the battle of the bulge where units were desperate for emplacements and some black servicemen who were in non-combat roles were allowed into combat to plug holes in white infantry regiments.
James Rule
If Three Kings counts for heist season, is Kelly's Heroes also on the list?
OneHappyChipmunk
Interesting little fact, the actor who plays Acebos’ butler is a left wing writer named Hsi Tseng Tsiang
Damien Tonkin
I wonder if they were trying to be anti-racist and therefore racism bad and racist institutions are bad but they were also trying to be pro troops/vets and they got caught up in a cognitive dissonance paradox and ended up retroactively desegregating the military?
Jacob King
I’m not sure if this is a Rosetta Stone of heist movies. After you’ve finished with all the Oceans (including Logan Lucky) you’ll need to get over to France and check out Rififi and Bob le Flambeur.
Emilio Porras Vergara
the slack pack
Frank Clay
Hey Gals & Dev, y'all forgot Oceans: West Virginia, or Logan Lucky, the heist film that has all the elements of an oceans film but none of the Clooney or Pitt.
Jess Edwards
as a Southern trans woman, I did call my dad Sir, when I still spoke to him. But Abby clocked me bad, he is hella insecure.
Tall Jeff
I know about Red Skelton because my parents have one of his paintings of a clown. It is of course horrifying and I have hated it my whole life.
RBK
Red Skeleton is definitely a minor Metal Gear character
The Project Project
That's just SO MUCH WORK though and I already wrote the post
Brian Danger Hicks
I remember during the promotion for the '90s movie they had one of the Rat Pack guys on and he confirmed that the resolution was entirely a Hayes Code thing and he wished they could've just got away with the money. In terms of the whole hanging out with your buddies and occasionally a movie comes out of it, I guess the true heir to Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack is Adam Sandler. Not Uncut Gems Adam Sandler or Punch Drunk Love Adam Sandler but Parade of Forgettable Straight-to-Netflix Movies Adam Sandler.

The "Abi doesn't know something" curve has gone from tribbing to Liza to Red Skelton; I'm not sure if it's getting better or worse.
Alexander Baez Ubeira
*Donning the Sinatra grandma, _Salmon Angora Sweater_* ..."got that shit ON"
John Leavitt
Okay but this kind of happened with Love Story. It was first a screenplay but his agent suggested they could make more of it being adapted from a novel so it was rewritten as prose, marketed to hell and back, and now there was big buzz for the movie version
Bones
my favorite part was them playing conway's game of life with the moving dots at the beginning, i expected >computer< to be more of a theme
Michael Tonus
I would like to use this opportunity to introduce my theory of the Hollywood Pre-make, which is like a remake. Except it's when Hollywood makes a movie in the 2000's that feels like it should have already existed, so they travel back in time and make an earlier version of it several decades ago, making it appear, retroactively, that the original was a remake.
Andrew Dunn
Wondering if they are going to do / have heard of "Dead Presidents". 1995 movie about a Black Vietnam veteran who returns home and decides he has to do a bank heist in order to keep his head above water. Has Chris Tucker (in a serious role) and Keith David.
John Leavitt
Also around this time he was dating Kim Novak under such a veil of secrecy the studio made him get married to a random backup dancer for a year
Brian Taulbee
Great episode! And I once again renew my urging that y’all do How to Steal a Million for Robbery season, if only to turbocharge November’s 60s woman dysphoria. Also because it’s a really good movie.
The Project Project
@Devon: You can go ahead and drop my name from your thank-you reading. I know I'm donating and feel reasonably confident that you're all as thankful as you can manage to be to a hog like me. You have enough to do, I don't need to stress the bounds of our parasocial relationship any further.
Spaghetti
You win.
AngryOldManYaddaYadda
My awareness of this movie came entirely from the SCTV comedy show parody, "Maudlin's Eleven"
Robert Young
The drunk woman Dean Martin gets rid of, the one who says she "I don't think I could lie down without holding on!" is a young Shirley MacLaine, who was already a movie star.
The Project Project
Podcasting the parasocial wastes almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
Andromeda
Devon reviewing the Logan paul-mr beast heist movie sounds like sepukku.
Camoose
I work in retail and while listening to this episode I heard not one, but two different dean Martin Christmas songs. It's a bit surreal
Jason Young
Sammy Davis Jr. had a glass eye because he got in a car wreck and impaled his face on the steering wheel.
Saint Muerte
I'm enjoying all the Fallout New Vegas references
Tall Jeff
One day I want a pack with a thousand rats!
Peter Larkin
It's 1960, Danny Ocean's are now battlefields
Jermy
Gunsmoke talk, maybe referring to the tv show?
Noblesse Oblahaj
Crazy that everyone talks like Benny from New Vegas in this movie
Andrew Dunn
Grew up in northwest Florida, born in 1991: the consequence of not calling your parents "sir" and "ma'am" was a spanking with a leather belt.
Noblesse Oblahaj
Frank Sinatra sledgehammering through his helipad like John Wick to retrieve a Carcano rifle
StudentChow- Will Cowley
Did not expect the Power Rangers in Space reference from Devon but that was a nice surprise.
Jack Fennell
Tangential remark: one of the weirdest 'military academy kid' movies ever is the Sylvester Stallone film "Over the Top," in which a truck driver has to reconnect with his estranged son while participating in an arm-wrestling tournament. The kid is in a military academy, which has for some reason turned him into a miniature Niles Crane, and the film positions this as the natural outcome of such an upbringing.
