S4E19.5: Constantine
🕑 Added 2025-08-01 10:13:42 +0000 UTCIt's Girls Night! Rounding out our little impromptu run of two-host episodes comes the 2005 Keanu Reeves comic book adaptation Constantine. Can John Constantine, a man doomed to hell because of a suicide attempt, prevent the coming of the Antichrist? can Keanu deliver a line with any emotion in it? And what is Shia LeBeouf doing here?

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla

-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

Sorry I'm late, catching up on old episodes - a couple of other comments have alluded to it, but I'll add my voice to say that the version of John Constantine in Legends of Tomorrow (the TV show) had all the stuff you complained about Keanu's portrayal lacking. Including the bisexuality. (I'd actually forgotten until I read a comment here that they imported the character & actor into Legends of Tomorrow from an actual Constantine show, but I never saw that one.)

My suggestion (if this isn't too late at this point) for Religion Season is The Borderlands (aka Final Prayer). The ending does come with a massive content warning, it's incredibly graphic and disturbing, but it's a British found footage horror movie that has a lot to say about faith and belief, most prominently with Christianity and Pagan beliefs. It's one of my favourite horror films

That Peter Stromare scene made me feel so funny as a teen--
Dr. M.R. Geldof
Honestly, Swinton and Stormare were basically in a different movie that happened to cut their scenes into this one. She almost sounded like her lines were written by someone else, someone better. Glad someone also noticed the hospital wrist tags.
Patrick Lopez
Did we miss that Balthazar is the lead singer of Bush?

My suggestion for religion season is "Boy from Heaven", alternative title "The Cairo Conspiracy" or in the original "Walad Min Al Janna". It is a political thriller from 2022 that can be summarised as "Conclave at the al-Azhar University". I can't recommend it enough.
Mollie Skye
Yall should do The Martian because the whole plot happens because Rocket Fall Down!

Chiming in way too late with a note that I’d LOVE to see KJB take on a musical. I’ve seen Fiddler on the Roof and Prince of Egypt suggested, which would also be great but I’d like to put in a vote for the ridiculous and too-on-the-nose choice of Jesus Christ Superstar, with its many issues 😂
Connor Emery
Event Horizon would be fun from a religion season standpoint, but I'm also submitting the Get Smart movie as a general show rec

Not religion themed but I’d really like to hear yall talk about castration movie, I saw it at a screening in manhattan and greatly enjoyed it. fair warning it’s very long and best enjoyed with at least one intermission
BitchyCatWizard
The Seventh Seal for Religion Season. ”Swordfish” (2002) for heist and for car season. Hugh Jackman as a 90’s hacker. Don Cheadle as a tough data crime FBI agent. Halle Berry as the femme fatale. And John Travolta in his best role between Pulp Fiction and The taking of Pelham 123 (?) which you should also watch.

Not sure if it's too explicit but my first thought for a recommendation was "Benedetta" if you want Paul Verhoeven flavor lesbian nuns
River Gilles Cooke
First Reformed is essential religion season viewing.

For religion season I have two movies I’d like to offer for your consideration: The 1976 movie Al-risalah/the message, by Moustapha Akkad, which is technically very interesting with regards to ‘how do you depict the life of Mohammed when you’re not allowed to depict the prophet?’ And the second movie I would like to offer for your consideration is The Tale of Princess Kaguya by Isao Takahata in 2013 which deals with some very interesting Japanese-Buddhist themes and folklore.

Can you do Fiddler on the Roof?
