As someone with an Australian surfer uncle who smoked way too much weed- yuppy surfer hatred is a real thing. Super real - fights and shit on the beach. I’m pretty sure he got done for assault on one of them because young guys were surfing in his spot.

Two things: 1st, most of the surf Nazis are played by members of the band The Red Hot Chili Peppers who were very popular at the time this film was made. 2nd, it’s really amusing hearing you talk about the actual remake in 2015 and how a spiritual remake could be made with a different extreme sport knowing that’s exactly what they did in 2001. In that version they replaced surfing with street racing, the surf Nazis with Asian street gangs, Keanu Reeves with Paul Walker, and Patrick Swayze with Vin Diesel. But beyond those changes, most of the plot beats are the same.

The moral of this movie, though unstated, is that attempting to hunt down a borderline harmless thrillseeker heist crew directly led to rape by deception and a whole pile of violent deaths, just to try to stop them making it to Australia where they would have all promptly ate shit and died in the storm. If the FBI ignored the surfer theory everyone wins. Edited to add: Is Bodhi the first example of a crew leader also being the Waingro?
