I would love to love this chapter I really would. But... You just made me read 30+ min of pure slice of life in a story timeline that will NEVER EXIST AGAIN. And contains almost no new information. From style choice of words and expressions this chapter was absolutely beautiful. But I'm honestly afraid to say for the story you could cut out 90%. You fall too much into extremely small detail description for virtually the same scenes over and over. And where it's not the same scene it's extremely similarly "empty" Slice of life. This just contrasts way too hard with the other part of your story the one where literally every single sentence has some description of how the MC could die at any moment/is currently in the process of going through excruciating pain or horrible danger... This really feels like you actually want to write two completely different stories and just kinda mashed the slice of life story into this one as flashbacks. Again this isn't at all supposed to be offensive to you author. I just genuinely do not see the reason for this chapter. I mean I suspect you're going for some kind of conclusion of "he hated Laura at the beginning and still came to love her so he could also get along with Gloomy" In the general sense? But if that were the case why spend an entire paragraph here about the way it felt to swim ashore or how Donovan blathers and Alex is annoyed or what feels like extremely detailed descriptions and lore for every single building alex ever enters? It's just too much detail I personally believe.

I disagree... The flashback itself was obvious from the timing. But it's way too detailed. We don't need 85% set up and atmosphere for this memory it's too much. It's nicely written in itself but it gives nothing to the story at large. Not only will this entire ISLAND likely never exist if Alex manages to change the entire nightmare results. The characters also will never exist like that. Flashbacks especially extensive ones she good tools because they SHOW the reader information so the author doesn't have to plainly tell us "Alex has a penchant for helping orphans and giving out combat style advice he also not always loved Laura and also isn't good at swimming also earth was completely fucked after integration" Really the only truly need info in this entire chapter was a) How children are handled and B) the whole marine Corps and magr family war. But even then b wasn't really news we have been told approximately every other sentence after all how the mage and vampire families and clans want to rule nd conquer the world...

Really excellent chapter even though it's entirely a flashback. In most stories I dislike them but I think you do it well. Seeing younger Alex is kinda funny, he's even more prickly and angry but I kinda like him more than current Alex lol. I think the reason why he's so intriguing to me is because despite all of his clear and obvious flaws, on a fundamental level he means well and that's something I can root for. Curious to see if he's able to parlay his old experiences and really become a better person as the story goes on. Or if he even wants to. Also last comment, young Alex is such a Tsundere lol.
