Well, as they become our allies in Half Life 2, their design was adapted to make them less creepy and more endearing. As for their appearance in Black Mesa, that was to tie in with Half Life 2. Now I have to admit that seeing the old Vorts design brought back to life by the series is a pleasure, as well as bringing back old memories.
