Hand Tracking Master Class in TouchDesigner with MediaPipe
🕑 Added 2025-02-18 18:30:15 +0000 UTCI'm so excited to launch this three-part Master Class on Hand Tracking in TouchDesigner with MediaPipe 🎉. I’ve taken insights from my Genuary artworks (a 30-day generative art challenge in January) and distilled them into a series of tutorials. This course will help you create your own interactive artworks and even extend hand tracking to build custom interfaces.

Thank you all so much for the support! It means so much to me and makes it possible to create resources like this. It's been so inspiring to see what you all have been creating using MediaPipe! Looking forward to seeing what you create next! 🎉

Hey, yeah the max number of hands is limited by the MediaPipe model. It was trained on 2 hands, so that's the max. I've seen people run 2 instances of MediaPipe with different webcams that don't overlap to be able to detect multiple people though

I reached out to Dom Scott, the other MediaPipe creator, and he implied that only 2 hands can be supported. There are some other libraries (a bit more technical) that run in python like rtmlib and sports2d which do support multiple body tracking that I'm gonna look into for my use case. In terms of TouchDesigner, Dom also recommended looking into the Body CHOP plugin, though he cautioned that the hand tracking isn't as good as with MediaPipe

Is there a way to enable hand tracking for more than 2 hands? If not, is this feature planned for the future? Just getting into MediaPipe, coming from the Kinect world in Unity.
