LGR - Motocross Madness Retrospective
🕑 Added 2023-01-17 01:58:29 +0000 UTCClassic game review time! This one is Motocross Madness from 1998, one of my longstanding favorites from back in the day. Some nice, happy, comfy memories with this one. I hope it brings some of that same feeling to you as well, it's still such a neat game world to screw around in and enjoy. Good ol' out of bounds invisible cannons, hehe.
Now, I hardly cover games anymore because, one: they rarely perform super well with the algorithm or with the general LGR audience. And two, I simply have more interest in hardware nowadays. Buuuut well, it's January. This is always the lowest time of the year for revenue and YT tends to tank channel numbers across the board no matter what I post. So hey, may as well cover a game that I love, screw the numbers! You'll note that this time last year was when I covered Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, and the reasoning is the same :)
I'm also using a new VGA capture setup here, or at least a modified one. I've been dissatisfied with my Startech VGA scaling box for years, as the visuals are always softer than I'd prefer and 60fps never quite looks correct, with dropped frames and stuttering that make higher frame rates look odd. So instead of that I'm using an OSSC to convert VGA to HDMI here. It's a device I've had for years but I've only used it with arcade boards and consoles, never with PC footage since in my testing it does not play nice with many DOS games and certain sub-480p resolutions. But considering MCM here was running at 640x480@60Hz, well that's pretty ideal, and the results are crisp and free of stutter. Footage from the old setup made it in there too with some of the menus, but everything from ~5 minutes in is from the OSSC.
And that is all for this week! I'll likely be taking next week off to catch up on projects, both IRL and LGR related. We shall see. Either way, have a good one and thank you for your ongoing support in 2023!

I just got my original disc running on PCem, as it's the only way I have to play it. This game was a joy, and even though it's not one of my favorites to play for extended periods of time, I definitely have fun with it even today.

Never played much of Fury3, I was always more of a fan of its predecessor, Terminal Velocity. Both are great with a joystick though. And yep, DNF2001 is very much on my radar! I don't plan on covering it on its own, but it's something that'll no doubt show up in future videos – as it has already when I use it as a game to test hardware :)

I never played this back in the day. It looks like it was fun. Did you ever play Fury3? I remember buying a Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick back in the day and it came free. Second worst performing video of the last two months, according to YouTube analytics. Entirely expected 😄 The only lower performer in its first 24hrs was the Christmas Steam game video. Which is also gaming, so… just how it goes

I have to ask, if you haven't taken down your surround setup, have you tried Thief with it yet? It was a life-changing experience for me, so I hope you'll get to try it out before the Creative arms go back in storage! There's nothing like being seen picking a lock and having someone yell at you from behind. :)

Oh dang, I was sitting here for most of the video thinking "Geeze, this sure looks like it plays like ATV Off-Road Fury," and lo and behold! Never encountered this, but I had...one of the ATV games on PS2 back in the day, not certain which, and I definitely felt that same drive-flow state with it. It was just good to drive and faff about in.
MCM sure does bring back memories and the out-of-bounds cannon was a blast! Besides that there was also another interesting feature if you are playing a LAN game. When you drive straight against your friend, your bikes will stop on the impact site and both players will fly quite long distance to the same direction they came from :D

FWIW, I really enjoy the software-focused episodes. I regularly play the DOS and Windows playlists late-night when I'm trying to get to sleep... I enjoy hardware videos too, though, so definitely do whatever works best with the Algorithm! ;)

There was always some curiosity I had to this - back on release, my PC wasn't equipped with an accelerator, so all I could do was check those reviews out. And kind of be in *awe* at the promise of the Sidewinder Freestyle Pro, and of course seeing the fabled thing not quite work out is a shame indeed. Though I imagine it would feel way more solid with a stick, or even a more modern pad I'd hope.
