Spooktober 2: Candyman (1992)
🕑 Added 2023-10-24 21:54:08 +0000 UTCMyself, George, and Elliot continue our Halloween-season tour through the Horror movies that fascinate us with a conversation about 1992's unique and indefinable Candyman, based on a story by the legendary Clive Barker, directed by Bernard Rose, scored by Philip Glass, and starring Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. A film that soars above its milieu and reputation. Superficially a supernatural Hollywood slasher in the manner of the Freddy Kruger movies, this is actually a genuinely complex, questioning, powerful and discomforting bit of uncanny cinema that takes on huge subjects - from race and class to folklore and belief - with real seriousness. This was a return to an old favourite for George and I, but a first-ever watch for Elliot, which makes the chat extra-interesting.

Having watched Paperhouse recently and loved it, I will definitely be checking out Candyman on the basis of this discussion! Just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your various horror chats - I’ve also been watching Hannibal for the first time along with the podcasts you put out. Keep up the good work!
