From the outro and Robert's comment... You said you hope people today see the value in NASA (and space exploration as a whole) and continue funding it... You mentioned "It's all about being in the know and not being caught off guard"... I assume you are thinking about NASA being all about searching for any evidence of Life outside Earth.... IT'S THE ALIENS THAT DID IT!!! Lol. DID YOU KNOW??? That many "Everyday Things" we all use every day were developed by, or with a lot of funding and guidance by, NASA? Space exploration is the most extreme environment we know, requiring all new technologies to be created, and/or extensively advanced, to be used in space. Extreme limits on Gravity, G-Force, Temperature, Radiation, Size, and Weight etc force space tech to be years, even decades ahead of the industrial/consumer markets here on Earth. Here is a list of things we all use that many who are not familiar with space tech are probably not aware of... ENJOY --- Everyday technologies from NASA research • Camera phones: The complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor technology used in almost all digital cameras today was developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the 1990s to create smaller and more efficient cameras for space missions. • Memory foam: Originally developed in the 1970s by NASA-funded researchers to create safer, more comfortable aircraft seats, this material has been adapted for mattresses, pillows, sports equipment, and prosthetics. • Cordless tools: The Apollo program's need for a battery-powered drill to collect lunar samples led to the development of a powerful, self-contained motor. This technology later inspired the commercial cordless vacuums, including the Dustbuster. • Water purification: To keep water clean for long-duration space missions, NASA developed advanced filtration systems. Earth-based versions are now used in community water systems, water filters, and to purify water in disaster areas. • Invisible braces: The clear ceramic material used in invisible braces was developed in a collaboration with NASA's Advanced Ceramics Research for use in missile tracking technology. • Scratch-resistant lenses: A special scratch-resistant coating created to protect astronaut helmet visors and space equipment from damage in space is now used in eyeglasses and sunglasses. • Infrared ear thermometers: These thermometers use the same infrared technology astronomers use to measure the temperature of stars and planets. NASA supported the development of a commercial version that quickly and accurately measures body temperature from the eardrum. • Precision GPS: While the U.S. government developed GPS, NASA scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory created software to correct for GPS signal errors, allowing for accuracy within inches. This technology is now used in precision agriculture and enhanced location-based services. --- Beyond consumer products • Advanced medical imaging: Techniques developed by NASA for digital image processing to map the surface of the moon were foundational to medical imaging systems like CT scans and MRIs. • Improved public safety: Materials developed to protect spacecraft, such as lightweight, heat-resistant fabrics, are used in protective suits for firefighters. The "Jaws of Life" used by rescue crews is a miniature version of a NASA-designed explosive device. • Air purification: Research to help plants grow in space resulted in air scrubbers that remove ethylene and other contaminants. This technology is now used in commercial air filtration systems to kill airborne pathogens and preserve produce. • Aircraft and highway safety: NASA developed safety grooving for shuttle runways to prevent hydroplaning in wet weather. This technique is now used on airport runways and highways to improve vehicle traction. • Satellite communications: NASA's advancements in satellite technology have laid the groundwork for modern telecommunications, including satellite TV, weather forecasting, and internet services.
