Private Island...
🕑 Added 2025-01-07 19:01:10 +0000 UTCI’ve been caught out in the Leicestershire floods.
I had to move the van twice last night as the water reached the tops of the axles and my diesel heater exhaust started bubbling.
Until we reached this high spot and there was nowhere else to go.
My mate’s narrowboat became unreachable so we had to campout 2 up in here and both phone’s went off with a crazy localised alert from the emergency services, didn’t know they could do that but either way it came a few hours too late.
Needless to say it wasn’t the best night’s sleep. 😅
Thankfully the water stopped lifting around 2am after the water was lapping my wheels again. It’s receding quite quickly today so hopefully in a day or two we can get out, but plenty of supplies on board & my new “neighbour” has sorted us out for water so for now all there is to do is sit and wait it out on our own private island. 🏝️

Oakham is our county town of Rutland. If the locals have any Leicestershire connection they'll go ballistic. We have been living in Rutland for 21 years and they still think we're " blow ins" 😄

What a mess! Looks like a lot of England's much wetter than usual right now (and whiter, seen any snow there yet?). I ran across a narrowboat YouTuber's channel yesterday who's been on the Bridgewater Canal, southwest of Manchester, when it collapsed a few days ago. (@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat, if you're interested. They've got some good drone footage) They were scurrying in the dark to loosen their moor lines, as they were beginning to tip when the water level started dropping. In 2013-14 I lived on a property by that canal, in Lymm, about 5km from where it collapsed, so it got my attention. All this flooding is hurting a lot of people and a lot's going to have to be spent restoring and beefing up infrastructure. Hope your travels can continue soon. Stay safe out there!
