The HP Vectra systems have been on my mind…
🕑 Added 2023-07-01 22:58:26 +0000 UTCIt’s high time I give these HP Vectra systems the attention they deserve… The Vectra line of systems are among my favorite enterprise workstations from this time period. The system on top is one that’s been in my collection for about 5 years now. No functionality issues at all, but it is due for a refresh. Also, I’m dying to show its absolute behemoth of a CPU: The Intel Pentium Pro! It is a sight to behold… Supposedly it has the highest gold content of any other CPU… Well this is one that the scrappers will never EVER get their hands on! The bottom two systems are of course from the Franklin eWaste haul. Hoping the plastic damage isn’t too severe on the bottom system. Luckily, the folks at Franklin eWaste were kind enough to save the floppy eject button. I can’t wait to see these two systems come to life!

Back when these were only a little outdated, I got one that my dad’s office was throwing away. First computer that was all mine!

Oh I have one of those weird things... HP 110-217c. It came as part of a large lot of hardware that was given to me by the owners of a company I used to sysadmin for. Absolutely baffling design choice… Doesn’t even have any expansion slots on the “motherboard”. The thing just seems like a mind-trick.

Ahh quality HP systems. I worked on this HP modern mini tower yesterday that was a joke. It looked like a normal computer but strangely weighed nothing. Turned out it had this motherboard that was not much bigger then being wide enough for the ATX backplate. It used a laptop PSU so the case just had this tiny motherboard, a single fan and a laptop optical drive. The rest of the case was completely empty and just air space.... Thinnest metal imaginable. All this but still the size of a normal mini tower!

I really liked the aesthetics of the HP Kayak line. I had two of the XA7 desktop models back in the early 2000s. They were PIIs. I gave both away I think, one to a co-worker and one to my brother.

The Pentium Pro has to be my favorite intel processor. I think it was the first time L2 cache was moved onto the CPU die and it ran at the same clock speed as the CPU. Later slot processors moved the L2 off the die and cut the speed in half so always thought it was a step backwards. I could be wrong though.

The hard drive in the top system still has its original image. Since it didn’t appear to contain any super sensitive data, I didn’t bother to wipe it. It’s all-business of course, I just added some games and utilities. I probably will eventually, but no rush at all since this is definitely a never-sell system.
