Has anyone thought of applying the pathology technique of laser capture micro-dissection? With LCM, it should be possible to sample material within each ring which could be used for isotope analyses and well as metabolomics. In theory, if you can find fungal spores or insect larvae you could also begin to use the approach to understand ancient landscapes and ecology (and evolution).

Thank you both for this Masterclass! Having been involved in plenty of field and lab work re. the timing of the onset Acid Precipitation in high mountain lakes in the U.S., I have an appreciation for precise dating! And I love the way the story unfolds as the data is analyzed, summarized, and placed in context. Looking forward to more precise interpretations of the archaeology based on those precise dates!
