Sir Tony Robinson returns for Time Team Specials

Dear all of our Patrons,
The moment has arrived... [cue drumroll]
We are delighted to announce that our original presenter Sir Tony Robinson is returning to film brand new ‘Time Team Specials’. These longer-form documentaries, centred on a key theme or iconic site, complement the traditional three-day dig episodes, now presented by Dr Gus Casely-Hayford.
To celebrate Tony’s return for new films, Time Team is also releasing a range of Classic Time Team Specials, which will be available worldwide, for free, on YouTube.
Sir Tony says: “It’s fantastic to be back! Time Team is part of the family to me and this really feels like coming home.”
Tim Taylor, Time Team’s creator and Series Producer, adds: “Wow, what an end to an incredible year for Time Team! We’re delighted that Tony has returned home to host the Specials documentaries, and we can’t wait to get started on our first new film together – hopefully the first of many!”
A Sutton Hoo Special is already in development, since Time Team partnered with the Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company to document the reconstruction of the mighty ship at the centre of The Dig. Time Team has worked alongside the National Trust to carry out new geophysical and aerial surveys at Sutton Hoo, helping to shed further light on this iconic site.
Updates on progress of the new Specials, expected release dates and how to watch will be confirmed as the project develops. In the meantime, Tony will be sharing a host of new insights and commentary on the Time Team Official YouTube channel, with additional exclusive content right here on Patreon.
Tim continues: “We are also thrilled to be releasing a range of Tony’s Classic Time Team Specials from the vaults. These documentaries showcase some incredible archaeological discoveries, from Stonehenge and Saxon royalty to the Industrial Revolution.”
Release of the Classic Specials is due to begin in the new year, with full details and schedule to be announced soon.
Tony continues: “I’ve loved watching the new episodes as a fan. Gus and the team are doing a fantastic job of continuing Time Team’s legacy. It’s wonderful to see the next generation taking up the torch and inspiring others with our shared passion for archaeology. I look forward to catching up with old friends and making some new ones!”

I’m thrilled at the several archaeologists and other cast members who’ve returned for the reboot of Time Team❤️. It would be lovely to catch up with Phil for a cameo. I feel like he has all the stories and just needs a venue in which to share them. I’d love a 3- part special with Tony, Francis, Carenza, Matt, Naomi, and of course Phil who has the most joyfully laugh I’ve almost ever heard, and everyone I forgot to mention. Ya, no you misunderstand what entertainment is for. TT is a way to get more people interested in archeology, period. Nobody thinks digging for three days somewhere is going to advance the science, but if it gets more people to fund science, all the better.

it’s good to have Tony Robinson back for the specials but I am glad that Gus is continuing with thethe digs - I like the fact that with Gus the archaeologists get more time to discuss and talk without being interrupted by the camera conscious approach of Robinson.

Do we understand any better than we did ten or twenty years ago what happened, exactly, or generally, when the Anglo-Saxons arrived? Did TT excavations of A-S graves add anything to the picture of Anglo-Saxon arrival we have? I think this is amazing news. Tony has the enthusiasm and gravitas to carry the new series of specials forward and help us reach a wider audience. This is going to be additional to the wonderful work Gus is doing with the existing schedule. If you look at recent work Tony has done it's clear this new venture "won't" be a simple reprisal of the earlier time team style, but a more thoughtful examination of the subject matter.
