Dig Watch: Iron Age Site (Purbeck, Dorset) - Day 3
🕑 Added 2023-09-19 16:42:58 +0000 UTCSlightly later than anticipated, but all the better for it... here's Day 3 of Dig Watch!
Our latest video update got a little soggy, so we had to put it on the radiator to dry out. Thankfully, that did the job and we're delighted to share it with you now.
More to come...
Thank you to everyone for joining us for another chapter of Time Team, including a very special thanks to all our guests on site. We hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have putting it together. But remember, this really is only the tip of the umbrella. There is lots more to come from this site in the weeks and months ahead, including more interviews, 3D models and post-excavation insights. So, stick with us as the journey continues.

Hi Miriam, I'm from the US, the Pacific Northwest. I just have watched ALOT of British TV and have figured a lot of it out. Plus, the son of a friend of mine recently married an English woman so if I get stuck I ask her. Basically, tiddly would be slightly drunk more like our tipsy; knackered is tired out, exhausted; and chuffed is very happy. Hope this helps.
miriam
please explain your English slang. my daughter is married to a brit and never heard him use these words
John A MacPherson
Loved Dani's genuine, joyful personality as she hosted these Dig Watch episodes. More time behind the microphone for Dani please!
Time Team
Hi Clare, unfortunately by nature, opportunities to join us on a dig are very limited. However, each year we hold competitions open to everyone to visit a future dig. Please look out for the next one, and good luck!
Leslie Peterson Sapp
Dani is a great host!
Larry Besel, Jr.
DonI does a great job as a presenter. Much more real than the the gentleman who is the new Official presenter.
Julian Elcock
Fabulous stuff. Great to see Daniel, Marvin and Robert involved. I loved my day on set at Oswestry so I know how much those guys appreciated the experience. It seems the team have worked out to stand guests in a trench and have Dani on the side, that would definitely have helped for me! Really looking forward to the new episodes.
Ian Smith
Did I underatand correctly from the final interview that Danni will be presenting the future dig watches? I think she does a great job - no disrespect to Derek and Lawrence, they contribute plenty in other ways.
Kavi Montanaro
I'd love to hear some of this exalted campfire music.
Jakub Jůzl
There might be another lottery for a permission to come, so with a bit of luck...
Bron Lloyd
You lot really do make me very happy! So proud to be a Patreon <3
Clare Stapleton
How can I come to the next dig? I would gladly fly in from the US for the chance to see people at work. In fact, I have just set up my piggy bank and am going to save like mad so the money is there when the next dig happens.
Patricia Amero
Thank you for explaining how it works and who does what. Please know that the really great work you all do, dedicating long hours for the highest quality production, is truly appreciated. 🙏 We are extremely fortunate to have such talented & devoted professionals behind the cameras.
Dyana Mason
Happy 30th Time Team! You are absolutely making us proud.

thanks - I think I vaguely remember that doll... Had no idea about the van though. I really miss seeing him around the digs so it's nice a mini Mick gets to come along to "oversee".
Gretchen M Root
Tiddly, knackered, chuffed. LOVE. My English slang grows by leaps and bounds. Can't wait for the full episodes. Seeing Derek with the Mick doll was so great. Miss his input and play with Tony so much. Hope that Rakshaw will be able to join in one of the digs. I miss her and Bridget, altho NZ is long way away.
Olivia Wilson
another excellent dig watch episode. looking forward to the full length now!
Steve Shearn
Thank you all for your lovely comments and support - very encouraging! Since Aldbourne, Dig Watch is currently produced by three people. I film most of it alongside what I'm doing for the main programme, Producer Felix captures material as well and it's all put together by Chris the Editor. We're a very cohesive and efficient crew and it does mean long days. But I wouldn't have it any other way ;-)
Di
Excellent Dig Watch! Excited for the full Dig episodes.
Mary Lu Perham
This is terrific! These dig watches are the next best thing to being there!
Elise Norwood
Brilliant! And so nice to have mini Mick on site.
Connie L Merchant
Happy with what you have done, Dani & Derek & Lawrence. Were the napkins in remembrance of Mick?
Julie Ball
Looking forward to the show now
Lori Benton
Thanks for doing this for patrons. I had no idea we'd get so much (this being my first time around). That Mick doll looked so comforting there at the end!
Pat Szastkiw
As I understand it, Mick was given the handmade Mick doll by a fan years ago and the current Time Team inherited it. Mick is the patron saint of Time Team. Also, the official Time Team van is called the Mickmobile.
Charlotte Edmonds
Fabulous! Very excited for the full episodes and these were all great - Dani did a great job and I'm frankly astonished the the quality of the Dig Watch videos is so high considering they're 'only' behind-the-scenes. Huge thanks to everyone who puts them together, and it's just so lovely to get a small taste of the Time Team family spirit too. Congratulations on 30 years!!

New to Patreon so this is my first dig watch series and I have LOVED it.... lots of teases so am really amped to see the official three days!! Where did the Mick Aston doll come from? That was sooo sweet and adorable. I instantly wanted one. Was that a lovely one off that a fan made? Oh and was so jealous of the patreon members who got to join the dig. Do you do that with every dig? I suppose you have to be at a higher membership level to qualify for the chance of that... Okay, enough comments and questions. but LOVED following Dani around!!! I wish Time Team was a four day deal. You always seems to discover things at the last minute and that the extra day would sure help - plus it would mean another episode for us all all to watch!!! Keep up the great work.
Wendy Sengpiehl
Looking forward to the Dig!
Brett
Love this format! And now a trio of hosts...
Charr Skirvin
I'm jealous of the guy that followed Stewart around. I would love to do that. Great job, all of you, and especially Dani.
Time Team
We're hoping there will be an option soon, but will announce any updates. Thanks for the support.
Clive McIntyre
I am sure Danni said Dig Wash! lol
David & Ruth Samuels
Thanks for the prompt response. Shame for now, but good for the future!
Time Team
Hi, unfortunately there isn't currently a function for gifting membership to others on Patreon yet. However, we understand it's something that is being explored for future, so we will keep you posted if and when we hear any updates. Thanks
Andrew Lamb
Great stuff guys and Lady! More, more more please! ⚔️💫👍😘🏴🇦🇺
David & Ruth Samuels
Is there a way of gifting my brother a subscription as a special birthday present? He’s very excited at the prospect!
Richard Seaton
Absolutely brilliant dig. Thank you all so much for bringing archaeology into our homes where we can enjoy the best bits without being drowned in a storm. I did apply to join the dig, so maybe on another occasion I'll pick the lucky number. The party looked fun too, and I hope we can see an extended recording of Tim and company strutting their stuff.
Patricia Amero
Me too, Valerie. It's my birthday gift to myself that gives back all year long. 🥰
Patricia Amero
In my humble opinion as a Time Team Patron, the answer is YES, you absolutely do us proud, and YES to Dani joining the Dig Watch Crew. Thank you to each & every person on the site... always bringing 100% professionalism & comradery Time Team does best. 🙌 Cheers! 🍻

A great Dig Watch Days One and Two, and a possible Day Three Miracle? I promise not to tell. Can't wait to see the finished episodes!
Elizabeth Neill
Great opening and closing shots on the video. Dani is great. It was a very enjoyable video, and amazing that you could put it all together in such a short time.
Nicole Loxley
The Dig Watch is a fun concept and Dani did a great job presenting it. Looking forward to more info and the finished episode! 100% worthwhile to support the effort on Patreon.
Robin Charlton
Great job Dan; hope to see more of you in this role
Cheryl Kurucz
What a wonderful host you are Dani!!!! I hope you host more shows!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mac Whatley
So glad that, as oil well drilling crews say, you didn’t hit a dry hole-it came up a gusher!
Bethanny Allain
I joined Patreon this evening, so I could follow Dig Watch. I have enjoyed it so much. Dani, you are a lovely presenter. Looking forward to the finished episodes.
Sharyle Doherty
Fantastic job by Dani!
David Boon
Another great dig watch. Looking forward to more, including more of the music. I was very envious of the Patreons who were there to witness it all.
Garry Matthews
Great one guys just wish I was there
Don Gibson
Wonderful job Dani.
littleinksmith
A grand job! Well done, Dani. I was also 10 when the digs first started and was glued to the TV whenever the episodes aired. Looking forward to the full episodes✨
jenni burke
Thank you so much Dani et al for a fascinating insight into behind the scenes of the Time Team. Well done to all of you.
Mats Frånlund
Big thanks for Dig Watch! Brings us the "lumps and bumps" of the dig:-)
Valerie Aston
Fabulous Day Three Dig Watch; thank you, Dani! I am looking forward to the finished product with bated breath. Becoming a patron of Time Team was one of the best things I have done in recent years.
Anne Collinson
Well done everyone.
James Leighninger
Dani, you did a masterful job hosting Dig Watch! Please do more of them!!
Neil
Thanks Dani for a great dig Watch! I am so looking forward to the episode. I wonder if everyone who participated in the dig gets involved in the post production process or is it just a small post-prod team?
Stephen
Can we buy the "Mick Aston" soft toy?
DIANA R NELSON
Really enjoying the Dig Watches.
JUDITH COOKE
Another great programme accomplished under difficult conditions. Pleased to hear everyone got through it in spite of the weather. Congratulations on a job well done. The spirit of Time Team is alive and well and I am so happy to be part of it all.
James D Speckart
Great job all around, and while I understand the frustration with the rain, it will add an extra element of drama for the viewers. Nothing like a 3rd act surprise.
Andrew Lavey
Very well done guys. Looking forward to the end result.
Sue Tweedie
Brilliant team -can't wait to see the episodes. I will be in Dorset near Corfe in October. x
dominique northeast
Spot on! Well done and thank you. Looking forward to the full episodes :)
Elizabeth Neill
I am also enjoying the Dig Watches very greatly. I especially enjoyed -- was this Day 1? I can't remember -- Tim explaining the genesis of the Time Team/3-day concept, which reminded me of the Much Wenlock episode, one of my absolute favorites, not least because it answered questions I didn't know I had about the history of the development of cities. (Urban planning major, don't you know.)
Jon Colcord
Well, I was waiting for that old original cast member to finally come back to join in the fun: Rainy McRainface. I hope he didn’t entirely wreck the day 3 analysis!
Elizabeth Neill
I completely agree with your assessment, Jill.
Simone Fritzen
Thank you so much for these dig watches! I love the mini-Mick!
Leah Kotok
So glad you didn't all wash away! Hope everyone got to take a well earned hot shower and a nap!
John Matthew IV
Tim saying "I've got blisters on my fingers" reminds of Ringo Starr saying that after recording "Helter Skelter."
Bartel
Dani is doing great - on Time Team News as well - a great mixture of curiosity and enthousiasm!
Steve Shearn
Unfortunately this was one of those digs where revealing a little would have revealed all so we erred on the side of caution. We didn't do that for Aldbourne or Modbury. I don't think it does any harm for a bit of behind the scenes and seeing the general familial feel of the entire unit who are as excited as I am to be back doing Time Team again 😁😁
Richard Kaskeski
Dani You are doing an excellent job pf presenting' You are a natural! thanks Farmer Rich.
Time Team
Hi Thomas, there are many steps still to come between now and the completed episodes, not least the post-ex analysis. As the recent Winfarthing dig highlighted, often some of the most exciting discoveries are made once the dust settles back in the lab, so we'll update you on progress as that develops. We also have 3D models of some trenches on the way, too, and will share a closer look at some of the finds. The release date will likely be mid-2024 (to be confirmed). In the meantime, we have some big releases coming up of other recent digs. Look out for announcements on our 'Digging Band of Brothers' Special.
Thomas Schulz Rohm
Thanks for sharing with us. Only hope for the future that you could share SOME findings with us patreons. It’s a little “dry” reporting with the present format. Very much looking forward to the real show. When can we expect that to happen?
Lawrence ORourke
An interesting overview. Look forward to the main videos.
Mark & Jill Jefson
Excellent work! Dani is great at doing the Dig Watch. Glad the rain quit so the dig could finish. I think this was the happiest Time Team crew of all the episodes.
NicMarie
I saw the forecast over the weekend and my first thought was 'oh no...the team's down in dorset'. I'm glad it didn't stop the dig completely and you powered on. Can't wait to see the findings. Thanks to the whole team in all the roles.
Andrew Lavey
Looking forward to the final version. Well done all of you.
Ann Wagner
And Dani is brilliant presenting! But I don’t want her to give up her actual profession and passion for archaeology. Can’t she do both?
Fiona Ducrey
Love the mini-Mick !
Carrie Hartley
Such a brilliant weekend. I totally get the working as a team, in adverse conditions-and those special connections and memories you make as you deal with what's thrown at you (Medical team at festivals.. very similar!) And the happy tiredness-feeling that you've been on a different planet.. it's a blast/ Looking forward to the revelations in my birth county!! Thanks all. Going from strength to strength... x
Ann Wagner
I love that Mick is always there. His spirit pervades the enterprise. History for the people!
Sarah Holloway
It was brilliant ! thanks to everyone involved and thank you for reading out my name on the flag .
stuart sutcliffe
I think Dani should do the presenting on all future dig watches
JanD
Truly joyful. Thanks TT!!!
Chris Bate
Cant wait to see the full ep... You guyz have done a brilliant job in challenging conditions ... Well done I say!!!!! :)
Frank Pellow
really enjoyed the insight into what happens when the rain comes. can't wait to see the finished episodes.
Jill Bray
You also had the 'rain-bomb' that hit Guernsey on Sunday morning! It must have been so frustrating for everyone. Imagine what you might have found if it hadn't happened!
Jessicka Catherine
So excited to watch this! I've come down with COVID so watching all your back catalogue today, so this comes at perfect timing!! 😊
Paul Faulkner
I hope you survived the downpour!
