Flash floods in Central Greece
🕑 Added 2023-09-09 09:31:01 +0000 UTCWe are shocked and saddened by the devastating flash floods that have swept through central Greece this week.

Dr Derek Pitman writes: “Over the last 8 years while working in Thessaly, as part of a multinational archaeological project, we have been warmly welcomed by the communities of Vlochos, Metamorfosi, Markos, Astritsa and Palamas. It’s thanks to the help and kindness of these amazing people that I am able to write this. I have just left Thessaly, along with our team after being evacuated from the floods. While we were lucky to find safety, many others are still trapped and sadly some have not survived. A significant part of the initial rescue efforts were thanks to the tireless efforts of heroic individuals and local volunteers, and I have never witnessed such bravery or resilience. I hope to soon share details of ways to help with the recovery.
To everyone that helped us, from the people of Thessaly, to our friends from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa and the Swedish Institute at Athens: Thank you.”

Poor Greeks and poor Greece! Such a flood after horrendous months of wildfires, drought and extreme heat ! It seems like Poseidon or the whole Pantheon are having a laugh at them.

On Saturday Sept 16 there will be an online live stream concert fundraiser by Seattle based Dromeno. Search Dromeno livestream on youtube or facebook for the link. Traditional folk music of Thessaly. Hope I have not breached any Patreon rules by posting this.

Greece had 2 years worth of rain in 3 days. I'm saddened that everything is sodden, relieved you're all safe and hopeful for the people of Greece and everyone suffering from the extreme weather globally.
