🕑 Added 2024-01-31 14:03:08 +0000 UTCFollowing Derek's Bronze Age site visit, we've adopted a Hastings theme this month on Patreon!
Ask any English person to recall just one date learnt from school history lessons, and there's a good chance you'll get the same answer: 1066.
William, Duke of Normandy's victory at the Battle of Hastings signified the end of Anglo-Saxon rule and the start of the Norman Conquest. But where did this decisive battle actually take place?
Experts have proposed several alternatives to the official battleground at the appropriately named Battle Abbey. In this Classic Special from 2013, Time Team entered the fray, in attempt to settle the debate once and for all!

I've stood there many times and wondered. I'm surprised the area around the roundabout hasn't yeilded artifacts

I stayed not far from battle with my partner in the summer last year and did battle abbey for a day out. Lovely town and even drove where the team say the battle possibly was! Great episode!

I loved this episode, it was great that Stuart once again was able to show that understanding the landscape is very important

Ah, I remember this one. It’s a convincing argument - As Lorthus says a follow up would be fascinating.

Love this episode! Tis on YouTube but not on the TT channel rather tis on an individual’s channel. I try to watch the TT channel but ifn episodes are not on it I’ll watch another channel. Much, much rather give TT clicks; clicks=money.

That would be great, wouldn't it. But I think that ground is very much disturbed/destroyed with all the streets and the houses.

Enjoyed seeing Alex Langlands in this. I loved the Victorian (etc) Farms he was part of. Great to see him with Stewart.

I would like to see some follow up archeology on that roundabout to see if it holds up.
